Roger Federer Bagels His Way Past an Over-Charged Haas

Rohini IyerJun 1, 2009

Statutory Warning: I am going overboard this time with my emotion, passion, desperation, frustration and finally sweet victory satiation...I feel I have earned that right after watching Federer turn the tide to his whim just like he would flick on a switch.

First of all....$%^&*#$%^&&&&*&&&&....this is my share of verbal beration to Federer for what he was trying to do against Haas in the first two sets; idiotic, dumb, highest point of sacrificial offering...looked like he was missing Rafa and Nole like hell!

At one point in the eighth game of the third set, I was actually praying "God let him lose...solves the agony once and for all!" No fist pumps, No Allezs, No nothing...God knows what came over him...looked like he suffered from short term amnesia at that moment; so much for playing tennis at a slam!

Amnesia symptoms became history after that for, post winning that game the way Federer charged at Haas, it reminded me of cheetahs pouncing on an unsuspected wilde beest the way they show on Animal Planet.

With a break in the ninth game, Federer served for the set and man...what a roar of "Allez" [or was that "C'mon"] he gave, it must have shocked Haas to the pit of his heart.

Maybe that's why, he handed over three breaks of serve to Federer in the fourth meekly surrendering for a "Federer Bagel"...[Someone please remind me who was the last recipient of a "Federer Bagel"] Oh the feeling felt acutely soothing: Two sets all!

One of my friends broke the news then: Haas had a very poor track record of losing matches in spite leading in the first two [Trust me, this friend of mine; he is very optimistic about Federer and in all the matches Federer has played so far, he had predicted a Federer victory].

Now, who wouldn't be happy with such a statistic, especially when your man is standing at the other end facing a literal life or death scenario?

Fifth Set: pressure situation [I felt a super over in a cricket match was better] and Haas serving first...I am a great believer in superstitions and when it comes to Federer, I multiply it by a huge number [don't make me recite it!].

Well, Haas was serving and as per my superstitious calculation and my friend's prediction, Federer had to win the set...but hey presto! Haas suddenly transformed into a "renewable source of energy" and won two games just like that...

Federer faced a break point too in his serve, though he saved it [he is a natural saviour from "Tennistical" point of view] and went to hold serve at 2-2; not to mention the fact that Federer started strangulating him to break his serve 3-2: Federer!

Federer serving and tension mounting: whew...no worries, his serve ticking, Federer held his serve easily; score line: 4-2 Federer...Allez Roger!

And just within a bat of an eyelid, Federer found himself serving for the set but Haas wasn't giving up without a fight; some good shots, some pointless errors later it was deuce...was the pendulum vacillating in Haas's favour?

No...Federer had had enough melodrama it seemed, and with a serve that has been ticking for him till now in the Slam, gave another example of it...Haas hit wide and Federer whooped like he was a soccer player hitting the winning penalty [C. Ronaldo, take some tips from this guy who knows, it might help you in Man U's next quintuple winning attempt!].

It was melodious hearing: "Game Set Match Roger Federer" though the scare was enough to last this entire slam, it not the entire season [Technically, I have a feeling that he is planning to do this one for each slam: he did this against Berdych at Oz, now Haas in RG, whose number is up next?] I don't want a Psyche analysis on this though...

Now for some positive energy from this match: Federer's comeback was good because, it meant he has the potential to take the pressure and throttle the gear whenever he wants to; he undoubtedly played like a true aspiring record "breaker" today inching closer and closer to a possible tennisdom glory.

Hats Off Federer....You were the best today!!
