Bowl Predictions 2013: Most Intriguing Potential Matchups Following Week 14
Just a few games remain until the end of the 2013 college football regular season, but there is still plenty up in the air with several championship games deciding the fates of where the top teams will land.
From the conundrum in the SEC that Auburn cornerback Chris Davis caused with his game-ending field goal return for a touchdown to Brady Hoke's decision to go for a two-point conversion that ended Michigan's upset bid against Ohio State, the bowl projections look dramatically different from last week.
While huge upsets from Michigan State or Duke could throw yet another wrench in any projections for the BCS Championship and any other projections, here's a look at some of the most intriguing potential matchups in the postseason.
Orange Bowl: Alabama vs. Clemson
My, how the mighty have fallen, sort of. After a season where it appeared Alabama would once again continue its monopoly over all of college football, Auburn shocked the nation and possibly dropped the Crimson Tide out of the BCS Championship game, for now.
Didn't see the game winner? Close your eyes, 'Bama fans.
Alabama's loss is our gain. The Tide might not be able to win their fourth national championship in four years, but college football fans might get to witness one of the best offenses against the No. 2 scoring defense in the nation.
Clemson comes in scoring 40.2 points per game thanks to weapons like quarterback Tajh Boyd and explosive receivers Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant. Meanwhile, Alabama's defense has allowed opponents to score more than 10 points just three times all season and allows just 11.3 points per game.
Prediction: Alabama 28, Clemson 23
Rose Bowl: Michigan State vs. Stanford
The Spartans have a chance to upset the Buckeyes and erase any chance of a National Championship bid, but it appears they would likely be destined for the Rose Bowl either way.
Meanwhile, Stanford has recovered nicely from its loss to USC and would need to beat Arizona State in order to play in the Rose Bowl. That's why these are only projections.
The Orange Bowl may present a struggle between one explosive offense and a shutdown defense, the Rose Bowl might match up two of the nation's top 15 defenses. Michigan State and Stanford possess the No. 4 and No. 13 scoring defenses in the country, respectively.
This might not be one of the most exciting games played during the bowl season, but for true college football fans it will be one of the most enticing.
Prediction: Stanford 17, Michigan State 14
Cotton Bowl: Baylor vs. LSU
OK, we'll finally move away from the low-scoring showdowns and take a look at the best possible shootout. Baylor needs a win over Texas before this is a surefire projection, but the Bears offense going toe-to-toe with LSU's offense could create all sorts of offensive fireworks.
It also appears that Zach Mettenberger will return for a bowl game, according to Glenn Guilbeau of USA Today, setting up a matchup between two top 25 offenses.
Let's put it this way, when the Bears offense struggled against TCU, it still put up nearly 400 yards of offense:
With both teams at full strength, it's easy to expect huge games from both Bryce Petty and Mettenberger, but in the end the Baylor explosive offense wins out.
Prediction: Baylor 48, LSU 42
