Greatest World Football Moments of the Weekend: Ibra, Costa and the Yellow Wall

Laura GreeneNov 25, 2013

In our round-up of the best action from across the globe, we revisit Carlos Vela's record-breaking glut of goals for Real Sociedad, a hugely important win for Brasileirao side Vasco da Gama and Diego Costa's "worldy" play for high-flying Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere, we indulge in watching replays of Luis Suarez's sumptuous free-kick in the Merseyside derby, look back at Manchester City's rout of Tottenham Hotspur and re-watch a sublime Zlatan Ibrahimovic pass again, again and, yep, again.

We also sit back and appreciate a clip of Borussia Dortmund's "yellow wall," which were unbelievably impressive, following their side's stinging defeat against Bayern Munich.

There's all that and much more, so enjoy the slideshow and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

A Stunning Strike from Andre-Pierre Gignac

1 of 10

Andre-Pierre Gignac scored his sixth goal of the season for Marseille on Friday, and he did it in truly spectacular fashion.

The Frenchman scored a volley good enough to rival any Zlatan Ibrahimovic strike, when he found the back of the net in L'OM's 3-1 win against Ajaccio.

You can see Gignac's goal by clicking here.

The victory saw Elie Baup's side end the weekend fourth in Ligue 1, five points behind Monaco.

Suarez Free-Kick in Captivating Derby

2 of 10

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez notched his ninth goal in seven Premier League outings on Saturday, in a pulsating Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

In a game that ended with the spoils even at 3-3, Suarez's 19th minute goal was one of five set-pieces scored during the game.

It was a free-kick good enough to rival any, as the Uruguayan's shot wrapped around the Everton wall and found the back of the net.

No matter what you think of Suarez, this goal was sublime.

Carlos Vela Breaks Goal Drought with Fantastic Four

3 of 10

Real Sociedad's Carlos Vela became the first Mexican to score four goals in a single La Liga game on Saturday.

The former Arsenal man had gone 10 league matches without scoring, before notching all of his side's goals in a dramatic 4-3 win against Celta Vigo.

The victory moved the Basque side up to sixth in the table.

Artur Boruc's Goalkeeping Howler

4 of 10

If you are a goalkeeper, you probably have nightmares about this sort of thing. To Artur Boruc and Southampton, it actually happened.

Instead of dealing swiftly with a routine back pass from Nathaniel Clyne, the Saints keeper took his time and tried to outmaneuver Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud with the ball at his feet.

He tried a back-heel. He tried a Cruyff turn. It didn't go well...

Giroud simply dispossessed Boruc of the ball and scored with ease in the open net. As expected, the Polish goalkeeper's mistake was one of the talking points of the weekend.

Arsenal went on to win the game 2-0, thanks to a penalty from Giroud. All in all, it was a day to forget for Southampton's No. 1.

14th Goal of the Season: A Golazo from Diego Costa

5 of 10

Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa came off the bench in Saturday's La Liga tie against Getafe to score this sensational overhead kick.

Diego Simeone's side crushed the visiting team, maintaining their unbeaten home record with a resounding 7-0 win.

This goal was Costa's 14th league goal this term. Only one player has scored more in 2013/14—who else, but Cristiano Ronaldo, who is currently on 17.

Ibrahimovic: A Beautiful Pass

6 of 10

The 2013/14 season has already produced some classic Zlatan Ibrahimovic moments.

In Saturday's Ligue 1 encounter between Stade de Reims and Paris Saint-Germain, the Swede was at his best again.

The 3-0 win saw goals from Lucas Moura, Jeremy Menez and Ibrahimovic himself but, in a move that displayed true élan, Ibrahimovic made this pass to set up Moura in the 24th minute.

You won't see many better assists than this. Watch it here, watch it again and enjoy it in slow motion. It's a thing of beauty.

Borussia Dortmund's "Yellow Wall"

7 of 10

In a video that could be an inspiration to disgruntled football fans around the world, Borussia Dortmund's followers gave an incredible display of support at the weekend.

Anyone who watched BVB's journey to last season's Champions League final already knew that these fans were something special.

On Saturday, Jurgen Klopp's side were beaten 3-0 at home by fierce rivals Bayern Munich. To add insult to injury, the scoring was opened by none other than former player Mario Gotze, who found the back of the net just 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the second half.

Bayern's grip on the Bundesliga trophy is already looking strong, but Dortmund's fans? Well… they'll support their team no matter what.

Toluca vs. Cruz Azul: Liga MX Playoffs Get Interesting

8 of 10

Toluca took on Cruz Azul in the first leg of the 2013 Liga MX Apertura Liguilla playoffs, knowing that they had not beaten the visitors in their last eight attempts.

Fans of Toluca will have been happy with what unfolded, as their team put one foot into the semi-finals with their 3-0 win at Estadio Nemesio Diez Riega.

The match had many high points: a nice piece of build-up play and a resulting strike from Oscar Roja opened the scoring, there was a comical own goal from La Maquinas' Jair Pereira, and a decisive 79th-minute header from Francisco Gamboa sealed the win, in a move that was beautifully teed up from Antonio Naelson.

Barring a shock result at Estadio Azul on November 30, Toluca look set to progress to the next round.

Vasco Keep Survival Hopes Alive with Win over Champions Cruzeiro

9 of 10

Belo Horizonte team Cruzeiro have already been crowned as champions in the Brasileirao.

Thirty-seven points separated Marcelo Oliveira's side from Vasco da Gama going into Saturday's game at the Maracana.

But, against the odds, the home side ran out as eventual winners—beating Cruzeiro 2-1, thanks to goals from Edmilson and Thalles Lima. A solitary goal from Paulao was not enough to claw back any points for the visitors.

It was a huge victory for Vasco, who are struggling to avoid relegation this season.

The result is the equivalent of Wigan beating Manchester United in last term's Premier League, as they battled for survival in the top flight.

The Rio side are currently 18th in the table with 41 points and take on already relegated Nautico on Sunday, December 1.

Six at the City as Tottenham Hotspur Crumble

10 of 10

Manchester City have stuttered on the road this season, but their home form would strike terror into the most solid of defences.

On Sunday, Manuel Pellegrini's side demolished Tottenham Hotspur 6-0—thanks to two goals apiece from Jesus Navas and Sergio Aguero, an unfortunate own goal from Spurs' Sandro and a strike from Alvaro Negredo.

Ahead of the Etihad encounter, Spurs could boast one of the tightest defences in the top flight, having conceded just six goals all season.

It was a fine performance from the Manchester side who, unbeaten at home, have scored 26 goals in six league home ties in 2013/14.
