Manchester City’s Home Form
Manchester City are the only Premier League side with a 100 percent record at home, but even that stat doesn't tell the whole story of their form at the Etihad.
The Sky Blues have looked downright unbeatable at times on their own patch. In front of their own fans, they have scored 26 league goals—an average of four per game—while conceding just two in total.
Swansea City are next up for the chopping block. If City can replicate the form they demonstrated against Spurs then the Swans will struggle to take anything from the game.
Away from home, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have picked up a meagre four points from six matches. If the Chilean can find a way to bottle their home form and bring it on their travels then City will be real contenders for the title.
Newcastle Seeking Four in a Row
The last time Newcastle won four games in a row was at the end of the 2011/12 season when they managed six in succession, according to Richard Mason at the Northern Echo.
The Magpies have impressed since their dismal defeat to Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby. Nine points from nine against Chelsea, Tottenham and Norwich have launched them to eighth in the table, level on points with Tottenham and just one adrift of Manchester United and Everton.
Alan Pardew has favoured his system over his personnel in recent weeks, and it has paid off. While Hatem Ben Arfa is regarded as one of the best players at St James’ Park, the Frenchman has started the last three games on the bench.
It appears that Pardew feels Yoan Gouffran is a better fit for the style he wants to play, and he will more than likely continue in that vein when West Brom visit this weekend.
Arsenal Setting The Pace
There is now daylight between Arsenal and the chasing pack at the top of the table. The Gunners went four points clear of Chelsea and Liverpool with victory over Southampton on Saturday, and Arsene Wenger will be hoping for more of the same when his side visit Cardiff City Stadium this weekend.
This is the type of game Arsenal would have dropped points in in recent campaigns, but this is a new Arsenal team. They have shown a resilience this season that has been lacking in previous years.
This weekend’s game will be an important obstacle for Arsenal to overcome, as will their game at home to Hull the following week. With Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea to come between then and Christmas, Arsenal will be desperate for six points from their next two games.
Martin Jol On Borrowed Time
It may be too early in the season for talk of relegation six-pointers, but this weekend’s clash between West Ham and Fulham is a crucial one for both sides.
According to Darren Witcoop in the Mirror, Martin Jol’s job is on the line at Craven Cottage after Fulham fell to a fourth defeat in succession at home to Swansea on Saturday.
A fifth defeat away to fellow strugglers West Ham could seal the Dutchman’s fate.
The Hammers have gone five league games without a win, scoring just two goals during that stretch, and they currently sit level on points with Fulham.
Tottenham's Lack of Goals
While football fans revelled in Manchester City’s six-goal haul on Sunday, Spurs’ woes were as noticeable as City’s talent.
Andre Villas-Boas’ team are the only side in the top half of the table in the red on goal difference, having scored just nine and conceded 12.
Their defensive errors were well documented on Sunday, but they also offered little in the way of an attacking threat.
Erik Lamela looked completely devoid of confidence after being handed just his first Premier League start since he became the club’s record signing over the summer. Famed for his dribbling, the Argentine looked uncomfortable on the ball and he was dispossessed three times—per WhoScored.com.
Roberto Soldado looked equally off the pace with heavy first touches and poor movement. His WhoScored.com rating of 5.75 was the third lowest in the Spurs team.
Villas-Boas has a lot of work to do before Manchester United visit this weekend. His first job should be to settle on a starting XI. Then he can begin to work on consistency and patience in the attacking third.
