David Moyes Slams 'Stupid' Manchester United, Delivers Warning After Title Blow

Ben BlackmoreJun 3, 2018

David Moyes has warned his Manchester United players they are on the cusp of throwing away their Premier League title after yet another poor result at Cardiff.

Moyes watched on in despair as United conceded in the 89th minute to a Kim Bo-Kyung header, handing Cardiff a 2-2 draw that leaves United seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

He was particularly annoyed at Chris Smalling, who conceded the unnecessary free-kick which led to Cardiff’s equaliser. James Nursey of the Daily Mirror provides the quotes:

"

Similar to the Southampton match … we had the game under control and conceded from a set-piece. It cost us ultimately. We lost concentration. We also gave away a stupid free-kick which led to the goal.

I know we could have played better but we should have won it.

"

It was a particularly daft free-kick that Smalling gave away, tripping Craig Noone as the Cardiff man ran towards the corner flag. The Welsh side’s obvious strength is at set pieces, so the England defender should have known better.

However, Moyes will be concerned by yet another performance in which United looked anything but champions, despite the fact they led for the majority of the contest.

Wayne Rooney should have been sent off for a clear kick aimed at Jordon Mutch in the first half. Had the referee abided by the rules, Rooney would have been prevented from scoring United’s opener.

Rooney also created United’s second goal for Patrice Evra, but United never appeared to be in charge of the contest.

Cardiff enjoyed 50 percent of possession and offered 14 shots at goal during the contest—one fewer than their visitors, according to ESPN FC.

Such a performance has been endemic in United’s season and Moyes warned his side any further slip-ups will cost them the title.

“We were on a pretty good run and that is a blow because we can’t keep dropping points when we are winning,” he said.

Next up for United in the league are Tottenham, who are coming off a 6-0 thrashing at Manchester City. Much like United, Spurs will feel they cannot afford to lose at White Hart Lane, setting up a blockbuster encounter in North London.

Prior to that game, Moyes must negotiate a tricky Champions League fixture at Bayer Leverkusen, who are second in the Bundesliga.
