Gallaudet University, a School for the Deaf, Wins First Conference Title

Gallaudet University, a Division III school in Washington, D.C. for the deaf and hard of hearing, has reason to celebrate on the football field this season. For the first time since it began playing football in 1883, Gallaudet won its conference championship and grabbed its first NCAA playoff berth.

The Bison went 9-1 and have done things that no other team in program history has done, including winning the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference.

It's the only university that is designed to accommodate for the deaf and hard of hearing students, according to its website. Some players on the team have lost five percent of their hearing, and some are deaf. Differences like that can be tough in the locker room, and it was in the past. However, the players say that they became united this season.

Gallaudet's team has been receiving more and more attention throughout the season. As Johnette Howard of ESPN wrote earlier this season, the Bison have had some incredible moments this year, including a walk-off blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown.

Defensive end Adham Talaat has been looked at by at least 20 NFL scouts and could become the program's first NFL draft pick.
