First-half analysis
David de Gea – Assured handling early in the game and had no chance with the goal
Chris Smalling – A few sloppy pieces of distribution
Rio Ferdinand – Solid when called upon
Jonny Evans – Lost Frazier Campbell for the goal but did make a fine block to deny the same player
Patrice Evra – A willing runner down the left flank and found a great header to nod United in front
Marouane Fellaini – Content to play the holding role but offered little going forward
Tom Cleverley – Failed to get to grips with Jordon Much for the goal
Antonio Valencia – Produced a telling pass in the build-up to Rooney’s goal
Wayne Rooney – Got the goal that put United in front, but arguably should not have been on the pitch after kicking out at Mutch
Adnan Januzaj – Found life tough to exert any real authority in the attacking third
Javier Hernandez – The poacher supreme showed he has more than goals to his game with a neat pass to set up Rooney’s goal
Second-half analysis
David de Gea – Was put under pressure by an aerial barrage from Cardiff, but came through it
Chris Smalling - Won a number of key headers in the second half, but his foul led to Cardiff’s late equaliser
Rio Ferdinand - Composed at the heart of the back four
Jonny Evans – One vital second-half clearance to ensure United remained in front
Patrice Evra – Solid in the defensive third as Cardiff pressed hard
Marouane Fellaini – Clever flicked header and denied a goal by a fine save from David Marshall, but the game often passed him by
Tom Cleverley – Sloppy pass gifted possession to Campbell and almost cost a goal. Conceded a couple of needless free-kicks.
Antonio Valencia – A willing outlet and delivered a couple of good crosses
Wayne Rooney – Although United were on the back foot, he was a threat and his link play was good. But he did pass up a late chance to secure victory
Adnan Januzaj – Was on the periphery for much of the match and was substituted on 68 minutes
Javier Hernandez – Starved of service
Ryan Giggs – One glorious pass to put Welbeck clear but he could not get the ball under control
Danny Welbeck – Had one big chance but failed to take a pass in his stride
