A Big, Big Weekend

Liverpool are unbeaten in six league games against Everton, and a win against their in-city rivals could see them go top if Arsenal fail to pick up a win at home to in-form Southampton.

But Roberto Martinez will have other ideas ahead of his maiden derby. Three points for Everton, and the Toffees will go level in the table with Liverpool, so more is at stake than just bragging rights.

Arsene Wenger will finally be able to uncross his fingers as his troops return from duty with their national sides. Outside of midfield, the Frenchman’s squad is cut thin, and he, more than most, will have spent the international break occasionally peering out from behind his couch.

Mauricio Pochettino is an early candidate for manager of the season, and if the tactically astute Argentine can lead his side to victory at the Emirates, there is a possibility Southampton could go top if other results fall their way.

At this stage in the 2012/13 season, the Saints sat in the relegation zone with five points from 11 games and having leaked 29 goals. This year, they sit third with 22 points and boast the best defensive record in the league, having conceded just five times.

The other fixture between top-eight sides sees Manchester City host Tottenham. City are the only team in the league with a 100 percent record at home, and Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping to keep it that way after a disappointing defeat away to Sunderland in Week 11.

Spurs were also on the receiving end of an upset before the international break. Their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle exposed the main problem they have encountered this year: scoring goals. They have scored just six times this season despite having offered the most shots in the league.

Elsewhere, Newcastle, fresh off of wins over Chelsea and Spurs, entertain Norwich, while Tyne-Wear rivals Sunderland travel to Stoke.

Manchester United will look to continue their impressive run away to Cardiff, Hull host the struggling and manager-less Crystal Palace, and Swansea travel to London to take on Fulham.

West Brom and Aston Villa will conclude Week 12 when they clash at the Hawthorns on Monday night. There has been little to separate the West Midlands rivals this season, and their match under the lights promises to be an entertaining affair.
