UEFA World Cup Qualifying 2013: Where Each Playoff Stands Heading into 2nd Leg

Andrew GouldNov 16, 2013

All four UEFA World Cup Qualifying playoffs remain in striking distance after Friday's first leg.

While Greece and Ukraine established cushy two-goal advantages, neither France nor Romania can be counted out in Tuesday's deciding matches.

Portugal gained the upper hand on Sweden with a one-goal victory, and Iceland and Croatia battled to a draw, setting the stage for some monumental rematches.

Here's a look at how each playoff is shaking up after Friday's action.

Iceland 0, Croatia 0

In their quest to become the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup, Iceland battled with 10 men for most of the second half to keep the score even against Croatia.

During the 50th minute, Olafur Ingi Skulason received a red card for fouling Ivan Perisic in clear daylight on a potential breakaway. Despite receiving a free kick and more than 40 minutes to play at a one-man advantage, Croatia could not capitalize in Reykjavik.

Hannes Thor Halldorsson stayed busy all day, shutting out Croatia with six saves. On the other hand, Iceland failed to produce a single shot on goal while controlling time of possession for just 32 percent of the match.

The two squads will now enter Tuesday's bout on equal footing.

Greece 3, Romania 1

Greece got closer to planning their trip to Brazil after edging out Romania in a 3-1 victory.

Kostas Mitroglou stole the show with two goals, one to break the ice in the 14th minute and another to seal the deal during the second half. The 25-year-old forward has now notched three goals in World Cup Qualifying play.

Bogdan Stancu briefly evened the score with a header in the 19th minute, but Dimitris Salpingidis quickly snatched back the lead for Greece two minutes later.

While Romania held possession for 55 percent of the match, they mustered one shot on goal while committing 20 fouls during the defeat. They will now travel back home in hopes of settling the score.

Ukraine 2, France 0

Ukraine expanded their streak of consecutive clean sheets to eight with a shutout victory over France.

Les Bleus had their chances with 14 shots and nine corners, but they were unable to find the net, putting the 2006 World Cup runner-up's chances of qualifying in jeopardy.

Roman Zozulya and Andriy Yarmolenko each placed Ukraine on the scoresheet with second-half goals. France must now not only find a weakness in Ukraine's air-tight defense, but exploit it at least twice on Tuesday.

Tensions mounted during stoppage time, as France's Laurent Koscielny and Ukraine's Oleksandr Kucher were each handed red cards. Koscielny had just received a penalty earlier in the 83rd minute before hitting Kucher, who shortly after was ejected with a second yellow card.

As a result, both defenders will be out of commission when the clubs shift to France in a match that could get chippy if this ending is any indicator.

Portugal 1, Sweden 0

Cristiano Ronaldo ended the scoreless drought with the match's only goal to give Portugal the slight lead over Sweden.

Neither squad was able to deliver on the match's hype, as the bout remained scoreless with limited chances throughout 80 minutes. But the Real Madrid star broke through with a late winner.

He nearly added another score to the tally, but his shot deflected off the bar. Still, his one goal was sufficient enough to salvage a victory for Portugal.

While Portugal will hope for a stronger performance during the second leg, Sweden must bounce back from an ugly performance that saw them log possession for 32 percent of the match with six shot attempts.
