Manchester United vs. Arsenal: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

Arsenal have pulled five points clear in the Premier League table and lead defending champion Manchester United by eight points heading into Sunday's match. It makes for a very intriguing encounter at Old Trafford.

The Gunners' strong form has been buoyed by terrific play on the road. They have yet to lose away from Emirates Stadium in five league matches and are coming off a 1-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

United have been playing better as of late following a slow start. While they are certainly within striking distance of the top spot, a victory over Arsenal would provide a major boost heading into the next international break.

Top Storyline: Can Manchester United Begin to Close the Gap?

It's too early in the campaign to start using phrases like “must-win match,” but facing Arsenal at home is certainly crucial for United. Anything less than three points equates to more ground they have to make up later on.

The Red Devils are coming off a lackluster Champions League showing against Real Sociedad. Javier Hernandez missed a golden opportunity, Wayne Rooney failed to make a major impact and Robin van Persie couldn't convert a penalty in a scoreless draw.

United can't afford a similar attacking performance against Arsenal. Rooney must push forward and make his presence felt in the final third, which should open up more space for van Persie to operate. The link between to two stars is key.

Arsenal are likely to assume a defensive stance early in an attempt to frustrate the United attack and take the crowd out of the match. If they can survive the first 15 minutes, there's a good chance Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Co. can start to gain control as they have so often this season.

The other thing United will need to protect against, especially in the second half, is getting too aggressive. They want three points, but they can't afford to let Arsenal steal a win and proceed to fall 11 points back.

United are the side under pressure, but they thrived in those situations en route to the title last season. A similar elite performance is needed on Sunday.

Prediction

Arsenal should be riding a wave of confidence given their strong league form and their win over Borussia Dortmund. A road triumph over Manchester United would be another major step in the right direction as the halfway point approaches.

On the flip side, United should be playing with a sense of urgency. The match represents a tremendous chance to narrow the gap and get right back in the thick of the title chase. It's the type of match where van Persie and Rooney must play like the superstars.

Ultimately, the slight edge goes to United playing at home and with more on the line, but it's going to take a great effort for 90 minutes to get the win.
