Tim KeeneyJun 8, 2018

A group of Celtic fans were attacked by Ajax supporters on Tuesday night, shortly before the two sides kicked off in a crucial Champions League contest on Wednesday.

From STV News:

"

A group of Celtic fans were attacked by masked Ajax supporters in Amsterdam.

The incident occurred in the Old Sailor Cafe in the city’s "red light district" on Tuesday night ahead of the Champions League tie between the two sides on Wednesday.

According to the report, the assailants, armed with weapons, stormed the pub that was filled with Celtic supporters, broke windows and were shouting "Amsterdam hooligans" before departing quickly thereafter.

Here is a look at footage of the incident, courtesy of 101 Great Goals:

STV News stated that no pedestrians were injured, but according to Sky Sports News' Twitter feed, some police needed treatment while 15 fans were arrested:

When these sides met in Glasgow in late October, Ajax fans didn't behave much better, as they reportedly tore up seats at Celtic Park and clashed with the Scottish fans.

No one was arrested that time around, but according to Graeme Yorke at the Daily Mail, the wild scene forced UEFA to open up a "disciplinary proceeding" against Ajax following the match:

"

A spokesman said: 'Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against AFC Ajax for crowd disturbances and throwing of objects (article 16 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations) at last night's UEFA Champions League match in Glasgow against Celtic FC.

'The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on 21 November.'

"

Fortunately, after Celtic's website (per the STV report) urged its fans to be "extra vigilant" at Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday, there were no were no more major incidents during the match, as Ajax got a goal from Lasse Schone in the 51st minute and held on for the 1-0 win.

With Barcelona comfortably in first in Group H, it is a three-way race for the second spot in the Round of 16. With two matches remaining, AC Milan have five points, Ajax four and Celtic three.

With tensions sure to remain high, hopefully there are no more incidents such as this one.

Ajax host Barcelona for their next UCL contest, while Celtic take on Milan.
