Alternative Games to Consider

Away from the elite teams and televised fixtures, which games should capture your attention this week?

Hull vs. Sunderland

Life has produced an injection of joy for Sunderland fans.

Without a win all season, the ecstasy of beating local rivals Newcastle is a perfect catalyst for a run of form. Gus Poyet will be wary of the "Paolo Di Canio effect"—winning a few games and then becoming completely useless—but the newly installed manager is far more level-headed than the previous boss.

Poyet’s side played decent football against the Magpies, but they face a Hull team who are yet to show fear in the Premier League.

Steve Bruce’s boys have won three of their first nine matches since gaining promotion, per WhoScored, and continue to play with the kind of vigour that suggests relegation is a long way off.

Narrow losses to Everton and Tottenham highlight what a determined set of players Bruce is working with. The KC Stadium is yet to witness defeat this campaign, as Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham and Aston Villa all left Yorkshire without three points.

Even more impressively, Malky Mackay’s side are the only team to have scored against Hull in their backyard.

Both Hull and Sunderland are likely to attack during this encounter. A loss does neither team any favours and will halt a sense of progress for both. Can the Black Cats improve on their showing during the local derby?

Expect a tightly fought contest.

Stoke City vs. Southampton

This should be a fascinating contest, if just for the contrast in styles.

Stoke are playing improved football under Mark Hughes, but the Potters still lack a certain inspiration when pinging possession across the pitch. The introduction of Marko Arnautovic was inspired, as highlighted with his excellent performance in the 3-2 loss to Manchester United.

Even so, Stoke hover above the relegation zone on goal difference, quite a contrast to Southampton’s stunning run of form.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team continue to play stylish, free-flowing football.

Saints are currently in fifth and have branded themselves as entertaining to watch, difficult to beat. Pochettino’s back four—led by the excellent Dejan Lovren—have conceded three goals all season, averaging one goal against every three games.

Considering Stoke are struggling to net—currently ranking alongside Norwich and Crystal Palace with a league low of six goals, per WhoScored—it will be fascinating to see if either club move away from current form.

Smart bets are on Southampton winning with a clean sheet, but as we all know, things rarely work out so easily in the Premier League.
