Everton vs. Tottenham

While much of the focus will be on Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool, this matchup could potentially provide us with an excellent game.

There is little that separates these teams this season. Spurs sit fourth on 19 points, while Everton sit sixth with 18.

Both sides have a wealth of talented midfielders at their disposal, and it will be interesting to see how the battle plays out in the centre of the park.

The outcome of this match, however, will depend on the front man. Romelu Lukaku vs. Roberto Soldado.

The stats tell us the Lukaku has scored five times and Soldado four, but in reality the Belgian has settled into his new team much quicker than his Spanish counterpart.

Roberto Martinez, it would appear, knows how to fit his new man into his side. But Andre Villas-Boas has struggled to find a way to get the best out of Soldado, who has scored three penalties and just once from open play.

Soldado is the type of player who feeds off service, but with Spurs packing the centre of midfield, the Spanish striker does not see many deliveries coming his way. If you watch the clip below you’ll see how the majority of his goals for Valencia came from crosses out wide.

This should be a close game, but I’m tipping the balance in favour of Everton for two reasons. First off, they are at home. And second of all, they know how to get goals out of their striker.

Prediction: Everton 2-1 Tottenham

Newcastle vs. Chelsea

Newcastle host Chelsea this weekend after a dismal loss to rivals Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby.

The Magpies sit 11th with four defeats from their opening nine games, and it won’t get much easier this weekend with the visit of Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho’s side were fortunate in the manner they defeated Manchester City on Monday, with Joe Hart’s blunder handing them all three points. But that doesn’t disguise the fact that the Blues have been gradually getting better and better in recent weeks.

For all the talk of a lack of a centre forward at the start of the year, Chelsea now appear to have two in-form No. 9s at their disposal.

Fernando Torres has reeled back the years in recent weeks. He has shown glimpses of the type of football he produced in his Liverpool days, and it’s no coincidence that his improved form has coincided with Chelsea’s climb up the table.

Samuel Eto’o may be past his best, but he too has looked sharper and more determined in his last few outings. He scored a goal and assisted one (albeit controversially) in his last Premier League start, and he provides a viable option off the bench for Mourinho.

Chelsea look solid throughout their squad. There’s healthy competition at the back between David Luiz and Gary Cahill, they possess some of the world’s best midfielders in the centre of the park, and if Torres and Eto’o can continue to provide that spark then they will be serious contenders for the title.

The Stamford Bridge outfit should have far too much strength and depth for Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off.

The Magpies have leaked 11 goals in their last five league games; Chelsea should exploit their defensive frailties even further.

Expect a comfortable win for the side who sit second in the table.

Prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea

Hull City vs. Sunderland

Sunderland finally got a win on the board in Matchweek 9, and after seven defeats and one draw the result was warmly received around Wearside.

New boss Gus Poyet will be under no illusions about the task ahead of him, however, but victory over rivals Newcastle will have given him a much-needed springboard to work from.

The Uruguayan takes his charges to the KC Stadium this weekend to face a Hull side that will still likely be reeling after last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, which left manager Steve Bruce fuming—per Peter Edwards in the Express

Hull have impressed so far this season. Bruce has set up his team in a way that makes them very difficult to break down.

Their four losses have come against Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton and Spurs, and they weren’t overawed on any of those occasions.

For Hull, the problem is scoring goals. They are extremely light up top, and while they won’t be blown away by the big teams, they will find it difficult to kill off opposition that sit below them in the table.

Having said that, Hull should come through this match at home.

Before the weekend, Sunderland had scored just five in eight games; Hull should be able to contain them like they have done better teams.

Prediction: Hull City 2-1 Sunderland
