Top Matches
Arsenal vs. Liverpool
Arsenal have been outstanding as of late in Premier League, building up their unbeaten streak to eight matches while moving to the top of the table. However, the competition they have faced so far has not been too great.
Besides an early 1-0 win over Tottenham, Swansea City represents the only opponent even in the top half of the current table. Since then, the Gunners have beaten up on the bottom feeders such as Crystal Palace and Norwich City.
Facing Liverpool will certainly be a step up in competition, especially for the defense. Arsenal have not allowed more than one goal in an EPL match since Week 1, but Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge can certainly find a way to score in this battle.
Meanwhile, the Reds have gone seven matches without a clean sheet. If they want to find a way to pull off this upset on the road, they will have to be stingier on defense and shut down the Mesut Ozil-led attack.
Newcastle United vs. Chelsea
Heading into the week, Chelsea are tied with Liverpool and only two points behind Arsenal in the standings. No matter the result of the other match, they can make a big move in the table with a victory on Saturday.
This result certainly seems likely due to the overwhelming advantage in talent seemingly all over the pitch. Oscar continues to improve alongside Eden Hazard to help the attack, while the defense is as solid as they come.
However, a win is far from guaranteed against a skilled but inconsistent Newcastle. With Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy, the attack can stick with anyone in the league. The problem is an apparent lack of focus that allows them to give away leads late.
Still, Chelsea have struggled away from home this year with only one win in four tries. If the Blues are not careful, they can drop this winnable match.
Everton vs. Tottenham
This match should and probably will come down to defense. Aside a 3-0 loss to West Ham, Tottenham have been fantastic defensively in virtually all competitions.
Spurs have not allowed a single goal in three Europa League matches, while each of their six Premier League wins have come via shutout.
It will be a serious challenge for Romelu Lukaku and Co. to get a shot behind Hugo Lloris in this match.
Of course, Tottenham have not been great offensively this year. The attack is filled with newcomers brought in to replace Gareth Bale, and it seems as though they are still learning how to play with each other.
Everton have to make sure to limit opportunities around the box and certainly not make any mistakes that can lead to free-kicks. If they can do that, they can escape with a low-scoring victory.
