Best World Football Moments of the Weekend
After an international hiatus, the domestic game came back with a bang this weekend with plenty of sensational goals and noteworthy incidents taking place around the globe.
This week's roundup of the best world football moments takes in Italy, France, Germany, America and something very special from Ireland.
But first, the action starts with a man who has outright refused to vacate the newspaper headlines in the past few weeks: Jack Wilshere. The Arsenal starlet lit up the Emirates with a brilliant smokeshow Saturday (Sorry).
Jack Wilshere Scored a Tiki-Taka Masterpiece
1 of 9Arsenal remained at the top of the Premier League thanks to a rousing 4-1 victory over Norwich at the Emirates on Saturday.
Jack Wilshere opened the scoring for the Gunners with a sublime passing move that started deep in their half. The series of one-touch passes was described by Arsene Wenger as the "best goal he had seen," via Charles Perrin of The Express.
Be afraid, rest of the Premier League.
Samuel Eto'o Opened His Chelsea Goalscoring Account, Evoked Controversy
2 of 9Elsewhere in London, Chelsea kept pace with the Gunners with a 4-1 victory over Cardiff at Stamford Bridge.
Jordon Mutch opened the scoring thanks to a hideous error from David Luiz, but the Blues pulled it even in the 33rd minute, when Samuel Eto'o poached the ball from Cardiff keeper David Marshall as he bounced it, and the ball fell to Eden Hazard.
According to Dominic Fifield of The Guardian, Cardiff are understandably aggrieved by the incident and are seeking an explanation from the referees' governing body as to why it was not classed as a foul.
In the second half, Eto'o bagged his first goal for the Blues with a low-drilled shot.
Giuseppe Rossi Stunned Juventus with a Hat-Trick
3 of 9Going into half-time at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, Serie A champions Juventus held a 2-0 lead over Fiorentina. In the second half, they completely lost concentration, allowing Giuseppe Rossi to score three goals in 14 minutes in what turned out to be a 4-2 loss.
The American-born Italian has endured an injury-blighted few seasons but has now managed eight goals in eight games.
This was the first time Antonio Conte's Old Lady has conceded four goals in a game. It was also Juventus' first loss away to Fiorentina in 15 years.
Internazionale's Fredy Guarin Scored a Beautiful Bicycle Kick at Torino
4 of 9Internazionale were looking for their first win under their new Indonesian owners at Torino on Sunday, but they were denied three points thanks to a last-minute strike from Nicola Bellomo that made the scoreline 3-3.
The finest goal of the day was Fredy Guarin's gorgeous bicycle kick during injury time in the first half. It was the Colombian midfielder's first goal in 24 matches.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic Scored Yet Another Acrobatic Goal
5 of 9With seven wins and no points dropped, Paris Saint-Germain are enjoying their best league start since 1996/97.
The Parisians dismissed Bastia 4-0 on Saturday, with braces from Edinson Cavani and the Mighty Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Swede's opener was exactly the kind of goal you would expect from football's leading martial arts expert: His skilful, aerial backheel managed to beat a Bastia defender and the goalkeeper.
Also, it would be remiss to ignore the fact that Cavani's first goal was a bit special.
Tim Cahill Scored the Fastest Goal in MLS History
6 of 9The New York Red Bulls sit atop the MLS Eastern Conference thanks to a 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamos on Sunday. Thanks to the Houston Dynamos relaxed attitude towards defending, Aussie forward Tim Cahill was able to score a rocket of a goal after just seven seconds.
Cahill's 10th goal of the season was the fastest goal in MLS history, taking the record from Dwayne De Rosario, who scored after 11 seconds in a match in 2003.
A Millwall Fan Made Harry Redknapp Very Angry
7 of 9Harry Redknapp was celebrating his 30th anniversary in management this weekend, and things were going well as his high-flying Queens Park Rangers side led Millwall 2-1 going into injury time at The Den.
In the 92nd minute, however, things went a bit Pete Tong for the 66-year-old manager.
As a Millwall fan attempted to return the ball to a defender, it hit Redknapp in the face—perhaps accidentally, perhaps not. Either way, 'Arry did not take kindly to the incident and proceeded to shower the culprit with some choice language. Based on what happened last time someone struck him with a ball (Warning: Strong language), the heated reaction was to be expected.
To make matters worse, while he was distracted by the ball-to-the-face trauma, Millwall went up the other end to net an equaliser.
Before this game, QPR had managed an astonishing 13 hours of league play without conceding a goal.
Bayer Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling Was Awarded a Goal That Never Went in
8 of 9Bayer Leverkusen topped the Bundesliga on Friday night thanks to a 2-1 win at Hoffenheim. Stefan Kiessling's winner, however, was not actually a goal at all.
In the 70th minute, Kiessling nodded a header into the side netting, which somehow crept into the back of the net.
Referee Felix Brych awarded the goal, even though Kiessling initially appeared distraught at missing the opportunity—which he had.
Clearly feeling the guilt of having robbed Hoffenheim of a point, the striker later issued an apology on Facebook (translated here, via Brooks Peck of Yahoo! Sports).
The Bundesliga has thus far resisted goal-line technology, but this may speed up the process.
The Irish Women’s National League Delivered a Goal of the Season Contender
9 of 9We like to save the best until last, and the best this weekend was scored by Steph Roche of Peamount United against Wexford Youths in the Irish Women’s National League on Saturday.
That's some world-class tekkers right there.
