Sami Hyypia Reveals Goal to Become Liverpool Manager
One-time Liverpool stalwart and Kop legend Sami Hyypia has stated it would be a “dream” to one day take over the managerial reins at Liverpool.
The Bayer Leverkusen manager, who turned out for the Reds on 464 occasions across the space of a decade, has been impressive in his time in charge of the Bundesliga outfit.
For a little over a year, Hyypia took the reins at the BayArena alongside Sascha Lewandowski, but the latter has since migrated to a role closer to the club’s youth.

Speaking to German publication Bild (h/t ESPN), the 39-year-old noted:
"I have got two special places in my heart. I was born in Finland, and there the job as the national team coach is the biggest job. Liverpool has the other place in my heart.
I don’t want to say, ‘That’s my goal’, but—after the ten years I played there—it would also be a dream to one day be the Liverpool manager.
"
Since taking control of the Factory Squad on a solo basis, Hyypia has made an impressive start, guiding them to six wins from their first seven league matches.
Despite a loss at Manchester United, the German side are also still in with a strong shout of qualifying from their Champions League group after snatching a late win against Real Sociedad in midweek.
From his early steps as a manager, it would appear the Finn certainly has talent in a coaching respect, but Brendan Rodgers’ position at Anfield is undoubtedly secure for now given that the Northern Irishman is returning the club to some Premier League stability.
Bild (h/t ESPN) also reported earlier this week that Hyypia would be shadowing England manager Roy Hodgson during the upcoming international break, showing that he’s still hungry to learn.
Of course, having a former player and beloved club icon is a lovely relationship to form between business and pleasure, but can sometimes blind a side as to what their best option might be.
A club like Liverpool should be wary of which club legends they place their managerial faith in, with Kenny Dalglish recently ending his second stint as boss in disappointing circumstances.
