Fantasy Premier League 2013 Week 7: Bargain Buys Sure to Help Your Team

Nick AkermanSep 28, 2013

If your Barclays Premier League Fantasy Football team isn’t taking shape by now, it’s time to get worried.

Undoubtedly one of the most difficult things about this year’s game is picking bargain buys who can both offer an immediate slew of points and value for money across the entire season.

Prices change daily depending on the popularity of each individual, ensuring many competitors miss the opportunity to snap up a bargain player at their cheapest price.

Which players should you consider for Gameweek 7 and beyond? Keeping to individuals who are currently valued at £5.0 or below, let’s take a look.

Analysis

Goalkeepers

Both Brad Guzan and David Stockdale represent immediate value for those looking to switch their man between the sticks.

Aston Villa’s trip to Hull City is unlikely to see Guzan concede too heavily, although the Tigers’ home advantage will see them exert decent pressure on his goal.

The American stopper has been in fine form recently, as highlighted by his performance against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

He stopped Robert Snodgrass’ penalty that day and will continue grabbing the attention of bargain hunters as he looks to build on a 2012-13 season that saw him voted Aston Villa Player of the Year.

As for Stockdale, his recent stint in the Fulham goal is down to Martin Stekelenburg’s injury early in the season. While you shouldn’t consider the 28-year-old for a season-long place in your team, the Cottagers’ upcoming home game Stoke City puts him in a favourable position to win decent points.

Defenders

Unsurprisingly, full-backs are already shaping up to be the most popular style of defender this season. This is mainly due to most teams allowing their full-backs to bomb down the wing, a style of play that continues to gain momentum in the Premier League.

Take advantage of this.

Southampton’s Luke Shaw is exactly the type of player you should be considering. The 18-year-old was overlooked by many players at the start of the season, perhaps due to his inexperience.

In his first four games, Shaw not only attacked relentlessly, he helped Saints to three clean sheets.

Swansea’s Ben Davies offers a similar style, although the 20-year-old also has a goal to his name this campaign.

Geoff Cameron of Stoke is a more experienced option who netted during the Potters’ trip to Arsenal and will be confident of adding a third clean sheet to Mark Hughes’ improving side.

Cameron’s Gameweek 7 match sees him travel to Craven Cottage, where he will come up against another smart pick in the shape of Sascha Riether.

Although the German is less inclined to attack, his sturdiness in Martin Jol’s defence will laud a decent haul of points for his price.

Newcastle’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is also worth a punt at his £4.5 price, despite playing most often as a centre-back for Alan Pardew’s team. The Magpies have a difficult run coming up, but keeping Yanga-Mbiwa on the bench is a decent option to have heading towards Christmas.

Midfielders

Peter Whittingham has adapted to Premier League life brilliantly with Cardiff City. Malky Mackay continues to deploy him in an attacking role, a decision that has brought about one goal and one assist heading into his next match.

Hull’s fearless start to the season is allowing players such as Ahmed Elmohamady to perform with real confidence. The Egyptian is carrying out his duties across the pitch with menace and has netted one goal in five games.

Much like Pajtim Kasami of Fulham, he will receive decent playing time and has a good chance of helping your side with consistent points.

Alongside these selections, both James Ward-Prowse and Ravel Morrison should be considered for a prolonged stint in your team. Be sure to select Morrison now while he’s valued at £4.4.

Forwards

Picking quality strikers with a limit of £5.0 is extremely difficult this year.

It’s best to look for those who are currently underrated and in good scoring form. Topping the list is Hull’s Sone Aluko, who underlined his Premier League quality with a stunning goal to win the recent match against Newcastle.

Steven Naismith of Everton has emerged as a surprise inclusion in Roberto Martinez’s side and is responding admirably.

The Scot’s match-winning goal against Chelsea and willingness continually to chase down the ball is being rewarded with decent opportunities in a side that now includes the considerable talents of Romelu Lukaku. If Naismith can fire a few crosses into the box against Newcastle, expect points.

Kenwyne Jones, although not the highest scoring forward, continues to hold down his place in a Stoke side that is built to play around him.
