Best World Football Moments of the Weekend
We're traipsing the globe in this installment of the Best World Football Moments of the Weekend.
Beginning in Northern Ireland with a mind-boggling scoreline, we proceed through Belarus, Mexico and Brazil before finishing with Luiz Gustavo's golaco against Australia.
Naturally, you'll have been impressed with some other performances from the past few days, and you're welcome to describe them in the forum below.
Once again, what we're concerned with in this space are moments of magic and overall performances that catch the eye—whether offensive or defensive—from any match, anywhere in the world.
No region is out of bounds. That's the beautiful thing about football—it is everywhere, all the time with us.
Portadown 11-0 Ballinamallard United
1 of 5Kevin Braniff and Gary Twigg each scored hat-tricks as Portadown thumped Ballinamallard United 11-0 in a Northern Irish Premiership match at Shamrock Park on Saturday.
Peter McMahon opened the scoring after just seven minutes when he put the ball into the open net following Darren Murray's attempted chip over the goalkeeper, and the goals didn't stop coming until Ryan McStay's headed effort at the far post from a corner kick in the 86th minute.
With the win (even 11-0 triumphs are still worth just three points), Portadown kept pace with Glenavon and Dungannon Swifts for second in the table—just a single point adrift of leaders Cliftonville.
Ballinamallard, meanwhile, are just four points above the drop after six rounds of play.
Anton Saroka, Belarus
2 of 5Anton Saroka's stunner against France took place on Monday, but we're nevertheless including it in our Best Moments package.
Less than two minutes had ticked off the clock in Barysaw when Saroka, a Rubin Kazan midfielder, got his head on an in-swinging free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
Belarus and France were contesting a 2015 UEFA U-21 Championship qualifier, and despite conceding the early goal, France battled back to claim a 2-1 win.
Marco Fabian, Chivas Guadalajara
3 of 5Following a disastrous 2013 Clausura that saw them finish second from bottom, Chivas Guadalajara have picked up only a single win in the Apertura and blew a 3-0 lead away to Tigres on Saturday.
Nevertheless, Guadalajara playmaker Marco Fabian makes this list thanks to an exceptional bit of close control in the 53rd minute that saw his side take a temporary two-goal advantage.
With Tigres goalkeeper Enrique Palos Reyes having charged out of his net to challenge the onrushing Chivas forward, Fabian took possession of the ball just as Reyes was arriving on the scene and jinked his way past a defender before arrowing his shot into goal.
Tigres eventually fought back with three unanswered goals in the final 14 minutes at Estadio Universitario, but any points are valuable points for Chivas these days, and Fabian's strike played a part in the one picked up on Saturday.
Elias, Botafogo
4 of 5Botafogo continued their charge up the Brasileiro table Sunday, picking up a 2-1 win away to Criciuma in southeastern Santa Catarina state.
Criciuma, who have impressed following promotion in 2012, took the lead after just three minutes through Lins, and it wasn't until the 52nd minute that Octavio restored level terms.
But just as the two sides appeared headed for a draw, Elias popped up with a spectacular bicycle kick to claim the full three points for Botafogo, who are third in the table and just four points back of leaders Cruzeiro after 18 matches.
Luiz Gustavo, Brazil
5 of 5Brazil were well on their way to a convincing win over visiting Australia in Saturday's international friendly when Luiz Gustavo beat Socceroos keeper Mark Schwarzer in the 83rd minute.
Playing a neat one-two with Neymar, the Wolfsburg man took several steps forward with the ball before smashing an irresistible drive from 19 yards that found the back of the net right where the owl sleeps—just between the crossbar and the upright.
The midfielder's tally put the finishing touches on a 6-0 win for Brazil, who celebrated their country's Independence Day with a memorable triumph in Brasilia.
