Chris Horner of RadioShack-Leopard was the overall leader in the general classification and wore the red jersey coming into this Stage, but he was overtaken by Nibali (overall time of 41:22:22) after he could only manage a 20th-place finish.
Not only did Nibali pass Horner in the overall standings, but both Nicolas Roche (Team Saxo-Tinkoff) and Alejandro Valverde Belmonte (Movistar Team) also managed to pass him, forcing the star all the way down to fourth in the general classification.
That should be a great indication of how tight this battle has become.
The battle will begin once again as Thursday’s Stage 12 race is a 164.2-kilometer race that will be contested on the flat surface from Maella to Tarragona.
With the sprinters looking to get the best time possible before the race hits the mountains and this being the last flat portion of the event until Stage 17, it’s now or never for many of the sport’s top cyclists.
