Vuelta a Espana 2013 Results: Stage 11 Standings, Highlights and Recap

Donald WoodSep 4, 2013

Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Leopard won Stage 11 of the 2013 Vuelta a Espana, edging out second-place finisher Tony Martin of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step by 37 seconds.

Stage 11 was a 38.8-kilometer time trial that took the cyclists through the hills of Tarazona and featured some of the fastest times of the race thus far. With a rest day on Tuesday, the field was rejuvenated for Wednesday’s sprint.

Domenico Pozzovivo of Team AG2R La Mondiale managed to finish third (1:24 behind) and new overall leader Vincenzo Nibali of Astana Pro Team finished a very respectable fourth (1:25 behind).

Chris Horner of RadioShack-Leopard was the overall leader in the general classification and wore the red jersey coming into this Stage, but he was overtaken by Nibali (overall time of 41:22:22) after he could only manage a 20th-place finish.

Not only did Nibali pass Horner in the overall standings, but both Nicolas Roche (Team Saxo-Tinkoff) and Alejandro Valverde Belmonte (Movistar Team) also managed to pass him, forcing the star all the way down to fourth in the general classification.

That should be a great indication of how tight this battle has become.

The battle will begin once again as Thursday’s Stage 12 race is a 164.2-kilometer race that will be contested on the flat surface from Maella to Tarragona.

With the sprinters looking to get the best time possible before the race hits the mountains and this being the last flat portion of the event until Stage 17, it’s now or never for many of the sport’s top cyclists.
