5 Best Premier League Signings

Mikhail TurnerJun 8, 2018

The 2013 transfer window brought some great player additions to the Premier League, but five players stand out above the rest.

All manner of deals have been made this summer, with those hoping to avoid relegation relying on wily signings, as well as one or two surprises, and those hoping for silverware looking to add quality where necessary.

These five signings aren't considered the best based on what players have done so far(especially considering quite a few haven't played for their new teams yet), nor are they really a prediction for who will be the best.

We'll look at, and grade out of 10, five categories when considering these signings; club need, player quality, transfer fee, future impact and current impact.

While it's certainly easy to look at the big-name signingsbecause they usually have a significant impact on the league, team or world of football entirelythere may be a surprise or two. Loans won't be considered, only full transfers.

Here are the five best Premier League signings.

Honorable Mentions

1 of 6

Leroy Fer to Norwich City: 39/50

Norwich City picked up a great young player in the form of Dutch international Leroy Fer. The versatile midfielder will certainly improve Norwich City's fortunes this campaign, but he may just get snapped up by a bigger club in the future.

Victor Wanyama to Southampton: 40/50

Southampton needed another mobile presence in midfield to assist Morgan Schneiderlin, and Victor Wanyama was a great signing for that role. Wanyama has all the physical tools to excel in the league, and Southampton did well not to massively overpay for him.

Wilfried Bony to Swansea City: 39/50

Wilfried Bony's excellent season with Vitesse Arnhem attracted a lot of interest. Swansea City swooped in to steal the type of penalty-box striker they need.

Maarten Stekelenburg to Fulham: 40/50

After losing Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer, Fulham signed an excellent replacement with the capture of Maarten Stekelenburg. The 30-year-old has the quality to be one of the best keepers in the Premier League.

Erik Lamela is the closest thing to a replacement for Gareth Bale that Tottenham could get. The Argentinian youngster will have to prove himself in the Premier League, but he's set himself apart as a talent to watch.

5. Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United

2 of 6

Club Need: 9/10

Player Quality: 8/10

Transfer Fee: 7/10

Future Impact/Potential: 8/10

Current Impact: 8/10

Total: 40/50

Manchester United's deadline-day signing of Marouane Fellaini has considerably strengthened the club's chances of retaining its Premier League title.

The big Belgian will likely play in his preferred midfield alongside Michael Carrick, which means that he'll provide that much-needed steel in the Manchester United midfield. That means he can have a major impact on how dominant the Red Devils are against their opponents.

Fellaini is only 25, and he can be a big player for United from this season forward.

4. Roberto Soldado to Tottenham

3 of 6

Club Need: 10/10

Player Quality: 9/10

Transfer Fee: 7/10

Future Impact/Potential: 6/10

Current Impact: 9/10

Total: 41/50

Tottenham needed a goalscorer of Roberto Soldado's quality and experience. This signing is ranked a little lower on future impact and transfer fee because he's 28 years old and cost £26 million.

Soldado is one of the most underrated strikers in the game today and will certainly score goals in the Premier League. His goals could very well get Spurs to a top-four spot.

Soldado may not have a major impact on Tottenham's fortunes for more than a couple seasons, but he can certainly help in this campaign.

3. Jesus Navas to Manchester City

4 of 6

Club Need: 10/10

Player Quality: 9/10

Transfer Fee: 8/10

Future Impact/Potential: 7/10

Current Impact: 8/10

Total: 42/50

Jesus Navas is Manchester City's fourth most expensive transfer of the summer, but he is likely to be the most important.

Manchester City needed a player who could provide true width, and Navas is one of the best players available for such a role. The fact that he was only signed for about £15 million means City got a great player at a good cost, especially considering the current market.

Navas is in his prime and should provide some of his best seasons with City, but there isn't much chance for re-sale once he gets older.

2. Jores Okore to Aston Villa

5 of 6

Club Need: 8/10

Player Quality: 7/10

Transfer Fee: 10/10

Future Impact/Potential: 10/10

Current Impact: 8/10

Total: 43/50

Surprised?

Aston Villa picked up a fantastic talent in young Dane Jores Okore, who ranks high in all the categories. Okore showed he was solid player last season while helping his former side battle against the likes of Juventus, Chelsea and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Okore even turned down a move to sign with Chelsea.

Aston Villa's defense sorely needed help, and they've got a strong, young player, for only £4 million. Okore can make an impact and be nurtured into a top defender.

1. Mesut Ozil to Arsenal

6 of 6

Club Need: 4/10

Player Quality: 10/10

Transfer Fee: 10/10

Future Impact/Potential: 10/10

Current Impact: 10/10

Total: 44/50

Despite buying a player they didn't need at all, Arsenal still came out with the best Premier League, and probably best overall, signing of the summer. Ozil hits top points on all the marks in our criteria.

Ozil is instantly the best player on an Arsenal team full of creativity, he commanded a fee that was not outrageous considering the prices surrounding other big moves in the market, the lateness of the deal and his quality. The German playmaker will have a big impact now and in the future.

Arsenal may still find it tough at points during the season, especially with a long-term injury or two in key areas, but Ozil is certainly the best Premier League signing of the summer.
