Fantasy Premier League 2013: Midfielders to Rely on Every Week
With a keen eye on the team sheet every week before the deadline, there are a few midfielders who, budget restricting, you should be including every time their name is down.
In this era of squad rotation, players will slide in and out of form as they're rested, but the best ones fight through it to provide solid performances—and, more importantly, points.
Below are three players who epitomise these qualities and should be considered for every fantasy team.
Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool
Any lingering doubts prior to the season about Coutinho's ability to consistently succeed in the English game have been dispelled by some brilliant displays this year.
His relationship and understanding with Daniel Sturridge is already approaching Steven Gerrard-Fernando Torres levels and it's been a joy to watch.
Liverpool are going to be heavily reliant on both players, even after the return of Luis Suarez. With Gerrard no longer the marauding, box-to-box force that he once was, Coutinho is now the key to the Reds attack.
Making him the key to your fantasy squad is also the correct decision right now.
David Silva, Manchester City
David Silva is a creative force and deservedly makes his way onto this list. You can't always rely on Manchester City to give you what you expect, but Silva is too good to ignore.
He performed better in front of home fans last year, so that's something to keep an eye on. However, whether he's scoring or creating goals, he'll be an asset to every fantasy team.
When speaking to radio show Al Primer Toque (h/t The Guardian) after his appointment as City manager, Manuel Pellegrini cited Silva as “the kind of player that makes the difference.”
Listen to the man.
Kevin Nolan, West Ham
Not as glamorous as the previous two, Kevin Nolan is nevertheless a solid mid-price midfielder who will never give less than everything for his team.
Cruelly discarded by Newcastle, Nolan has found a new lease on life at Upton Park and carries a serious goal threat that is even more crucial given Andy Carroll's current injury predicament.
One of the old favourites in fantasy leagues, Nolan has an uncanny ability to pop up at the right time, get his toe on the ball amid a tangle of players and push it past the keeper.
He'll contribute points when there seem to be none available and inject hope at just the right moment.
That sort of timing isn't something that can be taught, but it's certainly something that can be bought.
