Keep reading for the details from a thrilling night of cup football.
Liverpool 4-2 Notts County
1 of 6Liverpool overcame a stern test from third-tier Notts County, scoring twice in extra time to win 4-2.
Raheem Sterling put the Reds ahead early with a stunning solo effort in the fourth minute, and Daniel Sturridge doubled the advantage midway through the half. But Notts County came back in the second half through goals by Yoann Arquin (62') and Adam Phillip (84').
In extra time, Sturridge broke the deadlock with his second goal, a low shot at the far post just before the break, and Jordan Henderson made it 4-2 in the 110th minute with Notts County demoralised.
Sunderland 4-2 MK Dons
2 of 6Sunderland overturned a 2-0 second-half deficit with four goals after the 78th minute.
Patrick Bamford (7') and Izale McLeod (55') gave third-tier Milton Keynes Dons a deserved lead, but United States international striker Jozy Altidore scored his first goal for Sunderland in the 78th minute to start the rally.
Connor Wickham, a second-half substitute for the ineffective Dong-Won Ji, then hit a quick double, converting Ondrej Celustka's cross for the equaliser in the 87th minute and beating keeper Ian McLoughlin with a deflected shot two minutes later.
Adam Johnson made it 4-2 deep in stoppage time, putting a gloss on the final scoreline for the hosts.
Bristol City 2-1 Crystal Palace
3 of 6League One side Bristol City reached the third round for the first time in 10 years by beating newly promoted Premier League club Crystal Palace 2-1.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas curled in the opener for the hosts in the 59th minute, and Scott Wagstaff made it 2-0 12 minutes later from Bobby Reid's cross.
Palace pulled one back in second-half stoppage time via Owen Garvan's impressive volley, but it was perhaps more than the Eagles deserved.
Palace, who made 11 changes from the weekend defeat at Stoke, remain winless on the new season. The Eagles have not won at Ashton Gate in 34 years, but Premier League survival remains the top priority.
