Premier League Players No One Has Talked About as Transfer Targets, but Should

Mikhail TurnerAug 29, 2013

Big-name players are always at the heart of transfer rumours during the summer but, in the Premier League especially, there is plenty of talent for other teams to pick up.

It's been surprising that some of these names haven't popped up much if at all in the transfer window, and that's why they get on this list. Some of them may just end up leaving in last-minute deals.

The circumstances surrounding a move will certainly vary given the player and the teams involved.

Some may be pushed out by new signings, some may be deemed surplus to requirements at their current club but could fit in well in new surroundings and others are just good players who should be targeted to strengthen a squad.

One thing these players do have in common is that they aren't unattainable signings, even this late on, and they are all solid players. Acquiring clubs will find it tough to sign them, but nothing can be ruled out during the transfer window.

Here are the Premier League players no one has talked about as transfer targets, but should.

Tim Howard

1 of 5

Tim Howard is one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Premier League, and it's a surprise he hasn't been linked with a move. Arsenal, we're looking at you.

His teammates Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines are the big names, but Everton would definitely find life hard without the American goalkeeper.

With a new manager at Everton, Roberto Martinez, and new competition in the form of Joel Robles, teams could, and should, have taken a swipe at trying to sign Howard. There is still time for a deal to occur, though it would be tough.

John Guidetti

2 of 5

John Guidetti's name has popped up a little bit during the transfer window, but one would have expected more interest in the young Swedish striker.

According to the Mirror, Swansea was interested in the player in July, while the Sun recently reported on Stoke City's interest. Not much else was said about the player before, or since.

Guidetti may have hoped that this season would have seen him get more playing time, with the July departure of Carlos Tevez and the previous departure of Mario Balotelli, but that won't be the case.

The young Swede put his name on the lips of many during the 2011/12 season, scoring 20 goals and adding eight assists in 23 league games for Feyenoord.

Guidetti is still only 21, and a prospect who could prove quite a good capture for a mid-level club capable of honing young talent.

Stephane Sessegnon

3 of 5

Stephane Sessegnon has been a solid, productive player during his time in the Premier League.

The Benin international was reportedly put up for sale by new boss, Paolo Di Canio, though the player stated that he preferred to stay at the club. It's surprising that the first rumour didn't lead to any official interest from clubs across Europe.

Unless, of course, any interest was dutifully kept quiet.

Sessegnon would provide plenty of experience for a new side, and could continue his starting role at another club, or be a good option off the bench.

His versatility makes him a great asset, and he's shown that he can succesfully adapt to playing in a different league, having moved from France to England during the 2010/11 season.

Lewis Holtby

4 of 5

Lewis Holtby's signing was met with plenty of excitement by Tottenham back in January, but the German's situation has changed this summer.

With Tottenham having added Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli, and with Erik Lamela reportedly set to join, it's fair to say that Holtby has gone down the ranks a little.

It's very likely that even more competition will arrive, with Sky Sports reporting that Tottenham has been given permission to talk to Christian Eriksen.

Teams should look to make a late run at signing Holtby, as he could be persuaded to move given the change in personnel around him. Tottenham may not demand an outrageous fee for the player, considering they only signed him for £1.5m, and Holtby would bring plenty of quality and versatility to any squad.

Holtby still has a role to play at Tottenham, but he will likely feel less assured of his playing time given the increase in competition for a spot.

Gyfli Sigurdsson

5 of 5

Gylfi Sigurdsson is in a similar position to Lewis Holtby. A host of new signings is likely to push the Icelandic midfielder even further down the ranks.

Sigurdsson has showcased his goalscoring ability in the Premier League, but it's tough to see him fitting in too much with Tottenham likely to play more of a 4-3-3 this season.

Teams that want to play a permanent 4-2-3-1 could use Sigurdsson's goals, and his ability to create for teammates. He'll be easier to sign than Holtby, but that doesn't mean he'll be easy to sign.

He's done well in two tough leagues, the Premier League and the Bundesliga, and has the talent necessary to perform elsewhere.
