Australia did exactly what was required on the morning of Day 2, as Jackson Bird knocked over James Anderson without a run being added.
Stuart Broad is a bowler who tends to get wickets in bursts and he removed David Warner, Usman Khawaja and the prized scalp of Michael Clarke.
There was DRS controversy, as Chris Rogers survived after being given out, but England just about had the edge.
Afternoon session—Australia 148 for 4
England struck early after lunch, as Tim Bresnan eked out the wicket of Steven Smith to leave Australia in a spot of bother.
It could have been better for England, as Bresnan put down Shane Watson, and Graeme Swann shelled Rogers in the slips.
The Australian pair took its chances in style, taking Australia through to tea without any further losses.
Evening session—Australia 222 for 5
The final session belonged to Rogers, who advanced to his first Test ton as Australia took charge.
Rogers batted superbly all day and battled through the nervous 90s before sweeping Swann to the backward square-leg boundary to bring up his ton.
Watson was the only wicket to fall in the session, caught behind off Broad, as Australia moved to within 16 runs of England with five wickets in hand.
