Napoli vs. Porto: Biggest Takeaways from Each Club After 2013 Emirates Cup

Joseph ZuckerAug 4, 2013

Didier Drogba stole the headlines from Sunday's play in the 2013 Emirates Cup, but the more intriguing match was the earlier one between Napoli and Porto.

Both sides will be very interesting to watch in the Champions League this year.

Napoli have a new manager and have welcomed in a slew of attacking players. At Porto, it's just the same old-same old. They sell their best players and still maintain a competitive side.

It's doubtful that either have enough quality to win the competition, but they're capable of making deep runs while simultaneously competing for a league crown.

Although Porto were the 3-1 winners in their Emirates Cup matches, there were still plenty of positives for Napoli, especially when you take into account their opening draw with Arsenal.

Here are three things we've learned about Porto and Napoli in the Emirates Cup.

Napoli

The Attack Will Be Dangerous This Year

It's hard to believe a club could lose a player like Edinson Cavani and actually strengthen in the attack. But that's exactly what Napoli have done this summer. They've essentially swapped out Cavani for Gonzalo Higuain, Dries Mertens and Jose Callejon. Combine those three with Marek Hamsik, Lorenzo Insigne and Goran Pandev.

Put it all together and you've got one lethal attack.

With so many new signings, it will take some time for the attack to get into gear. You probably won't see Napoli at their best until midseason. When they are, they'll be one of the best teams in Italy.

The Defence Needs Some Time

One area of concern will no doubt be defence.

Under Walter Mazzarri, Napoli only conceded 36 goals in Serie A last season, second in the league. But now the defenders will have to adjust to a different system while also welcoming in two key players.

Rafael Benitez will no doubt opt for a more conventional 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1. Either way, it's a big change from the 3-5-2 that Mazzarri used to so much success.

Then you have to throw in the additions of Pepe Reina and Raul Albiol, both of which were very astute signings. They'll need some time to adjust to Napoli and Italian football as a whole.

Bringing in a new keeper is especially a challenge early on. Reina's teammates will have to get used to his distribution style and habits when defending the goal. It shouldn't be a problem as the season goes on, but expect some struggles in the early stages.

Porto

Porto Have Talented Young Players. Should We Be Surprised?

There probably isn't a club in the world that has handled the transfer market better than Porto. Every year they lose one or two expensive players, only to replace them with young, talented alternatives. The club is still one of the best in Portugal and generally makes a deep run in European competitions.

Porto are a model for how a "selling" club should be run. You wonder what it is in Porto's scouting department that allows them to get so many talented players for such reasonable prices.

This summer, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez were the big departures, and they left for a combined €70 million. Losing one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and a world-class winger would normally hurt other clubs.

Instead, Porto just reloads.

Perhaps nobody's stock has risen quite as fast as Juan Quintero's. Porto bought him from Pescara for just €5 million. It looks like a massive bargain; Quintero displayed some fantastic dribbling to go along with his superb passing.

Rest assured, he'll leave in two or three years and net Porto a nice profit of £30-plus million.

Of course, Porto already had the likes of Jackson Martinez, Alex Sandro, Kelvin, Danilo and Eliaquim Mangala. Sandro and Kelvin in particular looked very good against Galatasaray and Napoli.

Having won seven of the last eight Portuguese league titles, it's hard envisioning Porto won't make it eight in nine.
