Arsenal Transfer News: Ian Wright's Advice to Luis Suarez a Bad Sign for Gunners
Arsenal have had yet another relatively inactive offseason in the transfer market, and recent comments by one of the club's most famous players, Ian Wright, puts them in danger of missing out on another prospective target.
David Ornstein of BBC Sport reports how Wright has advised Liverpool star striker Luis Suarez to remain at Anfield rather than flee to the Emirates:
"...If I was Suarez, when you look at everything, it does seem strange he would want to go to Arsenal. I would give Liverpool another season.
We need to see something I've not seen Arsenal do for many years and that is compete to sign players that Manchester United would want, that Manchester City would want and that Chelsea would want.
But they're running out of time and I don't think, at the moment, they've got the ability to attract those players because they haven't won anything in such a long time. This is why Arsenal are in serious trouble right now.
"
Whether Suarez ultimately heeds that advice remains to be seen, but it certainly can't help the Gunners in their efforts to convince the Reds to ship off one of their most prized players.
Wright notes that he would welcome Suarez to Arsenal "with open arms," though added that Arsenal must become more aggressive in bringing in top-quality players to place alongside Suarez.
The problem is that Arsenal don't have a lot of star power on the current roster, despite finishing fourth in the English Premier League last season.
Perhaps the presence of a player like Suarez would push them towards the top, but Wright has cautioned Suarez against it, saying that there aren't many enticing assets at Arsenal for the Uruguayan international to join forces with.
Manager Arsene Wenger recently promised to be "amicable" with the EPL rivals in his efforts to land Suarez. However, it appears that Wright is suggesting a much more assertive mindset in pursuing marquee personnel to bolster the roster.
Unfortunately for Gunners fans, it looks as though it will be another relatively uneventful summer. Many of the points raised by Wright make sense.
Suarez signed a massive, long-term contract extension as recently as August 2012, and has endured two controversy-laden seasons with Liverpool, which makes his new deal all the more questionable.
Perhaps that is part of the reason Wenger isn't pushing the signing to a severe extent. Having said that, Arsenal fans will be eagerly anticipating the manager to do something to make improvements and compete with the top class of the EPL.
Professional golfer Ian Poulter couldn't resist chiming in recently with criticism concerning the inactivity:
After losing out on Gonzalo Higuain, it could that Wenger has no choice but to make a huge offer to Suarez.
The trick will be to keep the 26-year-old on good behavior, which may be difficult if his first two seasons in Anfield are any indication. As Ornstein points out, Suarez is banned for the first six matches of the 2013-14 season as he completes a 10-game suspension for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.
Liverpool will not seriously consider moving Suarez until a £50 million valuation is met, according to Ornstein.
Despite the risks involved, it would benefit Wenger's standing with the fan base to at least make the bold proposal to counterpart Brendan Rodgers—and it might even pay off.
Ideally, Suarez would give the Gunners the attacking ammunition to seriously threaten for the EPL trophy.
But first, it's up to Wenger to make the move, and that's been something easier said than done in recent years.
