Liverpool Transfer News: Reds Should Deal Luis Suarez Even Without £50 Million
Liverpool have gone to great lengths to demonstrate they are comfortable bringing Luis Suarez back this year. That is a shrewd negotiating tactic. However, it would not actually be a wise plan to implement.
If Liverpool hold on to Suarez, the situation will get ugly, and Liverpool will be left wondering why they didn't accept one of Arsenal's lucrative bids.
According to Sky News, the Reds are holding out for "more than £50 million."
As Sky News also notes, Liverpool already rejected a bid of "£40m—plus an extra £1—for the striker."
That extra £1 is important. As The Telegraph reports, Arsenal thought it would initiate a "sale clause." Of course, Liverpool maintain they simply had to notify Suarez.
According to manager Brendan Rodgers, this hasn't bothered Suarez. The Telegraph passed along this Rodgers quote: "Luis is happy. He totally understands the club's point of view."
I have a hard time buying this. Suarez hasn't been happy for a long time. In fact, the Uruguayan made it blatantly clear that he hasn't been happy since moving to Liverpool.
In that same piece, Suarez lists the sources of his unhappiness.
He mentions everyone from the press to the Football Association, and while there is undoubtedly some truth in what he says, Suarez needs to be more focused on his own actions.
A player who bites people and receives a ban for racism isn't going to get the benefit of the doubt. Suarez has had some severe lapses of judgement, and he isn't showing he is ready to mature past that. In fact, he still has to finish a 10-match ban for biting.
When he is playing, there is no doubting his ability. With 23 goals in 33 English Premier League starts last season, Suarez proved he is a dynamic striker.
My point in all of this is, this is a player who likes to play the victim and not take accountability for his actions.
Liverpool would have to be crazy to hold on to him when he is a wantaway. He will find all kinds of reasons to resent his club and drag the whole team atmosphere down with him in the process.
I applaud Liverpool for making such a strong showing that they don't need to sell Suarez. However, if they can't get "more than £50 million," they need to settle for the best offer.
