Greg Oden Is Narrowing His Choices
There are a number of teams in the running to acquire former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden. Jeff Goodman and Marc Stein of ESPN reported that he is nearing a decision and has set up his final plans:
"Sources told ESPN.com on Monday that the Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings will all send representatives this week to watch Oden work out in person.
Sources say that the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks—which had face-to-face meetings with Oden last week—also remain in contention for the 7-footer's services. But the Heat and Spurs established themselves as the front-runners to land Oden last month and, according to one source close to the process, remain the co-favorites to sign him.
"
However, Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports reported that the list of teams watching him is down to two:
Each team has different benefits to offer the player and he will make a decision as to what is best for him. Of course, there is still a lot of faith from the team's perspective that he will be productive.
Oden has not played a game in the NBA since the 2009-10 season and even then he was a project. Despite his potential, he only averaged 9.4 points in 82 career games.
Anyone who signs him to a contract will have to take on the risk that his injuries have caused too many issues and that a full recovery simply is not possible.
The good news is that he has received plenty of positive reviews this summer. Former Heat center Brian Grant thinks "he can contribute" to a team, according to Shandel Richardson of the Sun Sentinel. Former teammate Mike Conley also said that Oden has looked good so far:
This move would obviously be a risk, but his potential that made him so highly touted out of high school is worth it for each of the teams in contention.
Contenders Want Mike Miller
After the Heat decided to waive Mike Miller using the amnesty provision, the shooting guard has generated plenty of interest from around the league.
Marc Stein of ESPN provides a look at the teams trying to sign the veteran:
It is not surprising that each of the squads on the list are title contenders. Miller was on Miami's roster for the last two NBA championships and has established himself as one of the best pure shooters in the NBA.
Over the past two seasons, Miller has made 43.2 percent of his shots, which is better than his already impressive career average of 40.6 percent. He will fit perfectly into the same shooting role with any of the four teams competing for his services.
While the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder each already have good shooters on the roster, they both could use someone to spread the floor to provide more space for their star players.
As for the Memphis Grizzlies and Denver Nuggets, each team finished in the bottom third of the league last season in three-point shooting and could use someone to keep defenses honest.
Considering Miller's recent history of clutch performances with winning teams, this might become one of the more valuable signings of the offseason.
Players Trying to Stay in the League
While most of the top free agents are off the board, there are still a number of players looking to make NBA rosters this offseason, a few of which have been out of the league for the past couple of years.
Quincy Douby is one player trying to come back to the NBA after a successful career overseas. The former Rutgers guard scored 75 points in one game during the past season in China.
This level of play was enough to earn him a few looks this summer. According to Josh Newman of SNY.tv (via Matt Sugam of SNYRutgers.com), the former first-round pick worked out for the New York Knicks, and he has received interest from the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Despite a few unsuccessful seasons in the NBA, Douby has shown that he deserves a second chance.
While Lou Amundson has spent more time in the league than Douby, his future is just as uncertain.
In seven years, the forward has played for eight different teams and has showcased the ability to be an efficient rebounder when given the chance. Unfortunately, he has not stuck around with anyone long enough to make a big impact.
The good news for him is that ESPN's Jared Zwerling reports that there is some interest from around the league:
It is unknown which squads are after the veteran big man, but any team is better than no team when you are a free agent. Hopefully, Amundson will find a team looking for frontcourt depth heading into the season.
