Picking a Gold Cup Semifinals Best XI
The 2013 Gold Cup has brought great moments. Four squads are set to fight for a place in the final match in hopes to secure half ticket for the 2017 Confederations Cup.
All of the teams have bright players, like Landon Donovan, who has proven to be back on track, or Andy Najar, who at age 20 has become Honduras' promise.
Here is the Best XI, conformed by players from the four semifinalists.
GK: Nick Rimando, USA
1 of 11Nick Rimando has had fantastic interventions so far. Perhaps his most brilliant performance came in the quarterfinals.
The American goalkeeper was a key figure in the victory over El Salvador. He made a couple of brilliant saves to avoid the tying goal.
Rimando's reflexes are certainly one of his most valuable assets, no wonder why last season he won seven saves of the week, and ultimately the MLS Save of the Year.
LB: DaMarcus Beasly, USA
2 of 11The USA captain has had some minor lapses but he continues to be a rock in this position.
Beasley not only defends and cuts the advance of some of the most skillful wingers, he also contributes to the team's attack and that is a very useful strength.
CB: Clarence Goodson, USA
3 of 11At age 31, Clarence Goodson is an undisputed starter in this team. He has proven to have technique and pace.
Goodson is very fast and strong, plus he can give depth to the team. Neither distribution nor ball possession are a problem for the San Jose Earthquakes defender.
He works hard and knows when things need to cool off.
CB: Osman Chavez, Honduras
4 of 11Osman Chavez is not only a veteran of Los Catrachos, he is one of the toughest defenders in CONCACAF.
Chavez debuted with the national team in 2008 has appeared 50 times ever since. Osman is the leader of the backbone and usually covers the most dangerous striker.
During the quarterfinals, he helped neutralize Alvaro Saborio, one of the deadliest strikers in the MLS.
RB: Miguel Layun, Mexico
5 of 11One of the tournament's revelations is Miguel Layun. The 24-year-old has been a cornerstone for El Tri.
He has two assists—one in the quarterfinals—, and has showed the world that he is capable of taking care of the right sideline, a position where Jose Manuel de la Torre has not found a consistent footballer.
Layun may even receive call-up for the first team if he continues to prove how unbalancing and dangerous he is.
DM: Kyle Beckerman, USA
6 of 11The Real Salt Lake midfielder is trying his best to keep the defense tight. He manages to break counterattacks and contributes to ball possession.
He knows how to control the ball, thus giving the United States national team pace and time to reorganize.
Besides that, Beckerman can surprise the rivals’ defense as he usually comes from behind to join his teammates in set pieces.
AMR: Andy Najar, Honduras
7 of 11Honduras has a very promising youngster in its squad. Andy Najar is a 20-year-old that currently plays for Belgian club Anderlecht.
He debuted with D.C. United and quickly became a key player. He was voted 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year.
Najar has fantastic evasive maneuvers and knows how to cut in from the right sideline. He is fast and skillful with headers and shots inside the box.
AML: Marco Fabian, Mexico
8 of 11Although Marco Fabian usually plays on the center of the pitch, he is no stranger to this position, as Luis Fernando Tena put him in the left sideline at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Fabian has been one of the most important players in Mexico's attack. He can run through the sideline or cut in before sending a cross or contribute in a wall pass.
Marco has come from less to more in this tournament. He is currently El Tri's top scorer with three goals to his count.
AM: Landon Donovan, USA
9 of 11He is back and the other three teams should be worried. Landon Donovan reappeared with the USMNT and has proven to be back on track.
He has six assists so far, more than any other player in the tournament and has scored three times. Donovan is just a fantastic ball feeder and finisher.
His creativity, speed and experience are the perfect combination to help his team reach the final match but also to write his name down in the World Cup roster.
RF: Gabriel Torres, Panama
10 of 11Gabriel Torres presented himself in the opening match by scoring two goals against Mexico, which ultimately meant the first time Panama beat El Tri in any game.
Torres is the kind of player that can work inside the box even in tight spaces. He is fast and has a fine touch.
His physical attributes have helped him become the joint top scorer, with five goals. It has to be said that "El Fantasmita" has made a fantastic partnership with Blas Perez.
LF: Chris Wondolowski, USA
11 of 11He is certainly not a kid anymore, but at age 31, Chris Wondolowski has become a striving force in the United States attacking zone. He is fast, accurate and knows how to beat the defenders.
The San Jose Earthquakes striker joins Gabriel Torres as the top scorer of the tournament with five goals, three of them against Belize.
In a two years, he has appeared 14 times with the USMNT, he has found the back of the net six times, all of them in July 2013.
