NBA Rumors: Latest Buzz Surrounding Teams Post-Dwight Howard Agreement
The two biggest free-agent fish are out of the pond. Chris Paul is returning to the L.A. Clippers and Dwight Howard is joining James Harden with the Houston Rockets.
But what about other, lesser-known—but potentially valuable—players still available?
There are still a few players who have yet to come to an agreement with an NBA team, so their services can still be had by a team that has a void to fill and money to spend.
Here's a look at the latest buzz on three players and the teams that are showing significant interest in signing them.
Andrew Bynum Could Be Dallas Mavericks' Plan B
Having been snubbed by Howard, the Mavericks are still looking to make a splash in the free-agent market. They did everything possible to clear cap room for Howard, so they have options.
According to ESPN's Marc Stein, the Mavs have "legit" interest in former Laker and 76er (well, sort of) Andrew Bynum.
As strange as it may seem, the Mavs could actually come out as winners in this situation, but they need a lot of things to go their way. First and foremost, they need to sign Bynum to a smart deal.
Anything more than a two-year deal with a team option for the second year would be ludicrous for Bynum. He's been too erratic, unprofessional and injury-prone to lock him in to a long-term deal.
If the Mavs can ink him and he stays healthy (a huge "if"), he could bring production comparable to Howard's. Better yet, he wouldn't require as much of a financial commitment.
Denver Nuggets Looking to Replace Andre Iguodala With Monta Ellis
The Nuggets have reportedly targeted Monta Ellis, per Shams Charania of Real GM. While Ellis can't defend and rebound like Andre Iguodala, he can score like few other shooting guards in the NBA. Last season Ellis poured in 19 points per game for the Milwaukee Bucks.
He and Danilo Gallinari would make for an exciting and potentially high-scoring duo in the Nuggets' lineup. However, the Nuggets should receive a healthy amount of competition for Ellis' services.
Contenders know Ellis could be the offensive presence their teams need to push them to an NBA title.
The edge Denver has is that it has the cap space to sign Ellis outright without a sign-and-trade deal.
New York Knicks Still Chasing Elton Brand
The Knicks obviously want to add a veteran presence to their bench. That has to be the reason behind their pursuit of Elton Brand. The Knicks and other teams are interested in the 14-year-veteran, per ESPN's Jared Zwerling.
This seems like a waste for the Knicks who were already ancient in the frontcourt last season. Brand is a consummate professional and hard worker, but since he is 34 years old, it is hard to imagine what Brand could bring to the Knicks that would help push them to the next level.
The deal would be modest, but it still seems as though adding youth would be more appropriate.
