2013 Wimbledon: Ranking the Remaining American Men at All-England Club

Ryan RudnanskyJun 8, 2018

The top-ranked Americans at Wimbledon 2013—Sam Querrey and John Isner—have already been bounced from the tournament.

Heading into Day 4 at the All-England Club, James Blake, Denis Kudla and Bobby Reynolds are the three remaining Americans. One of them has to play world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Here are my rankings of the three remaining Americans still standing at Wimbledon 2013 (world rankings in parentheses).

3. Bobby Reynolds (No. 156)

Bobby Reynolds had played three matches on the ATP Tour heading into Wimbledon this year, and he had lost two of them. Before the tournament, he was also 6-16 in Grand Slams and 4-11 on grass. Not to mention, the 30-year-old has never advanced past the third round at Wimbledon.

Now he gets to face Novak Djokovic, who stormed through world No. 34 Florida Mayer in straight sets in the first round.

Have fun, Bobby.

2. Denis Kudla (No. 105)

After going 2-6 on tour last year, Denis Kudla is 3-3 this year. That includes an impressive victory over Benoit Paire in the AEGON Championships in London this month. The 20-year-old is also 6-3 lifetime on grass.

Kudla—who defeated James Duckworth in five sets in the first round—will play Croatia's Ivan Dodig in the second round on Thursday.

Dodig is 18-16 this year. He is 13-10 on grass, never advancing past the second round at Wimbledon. He defeated No. 16 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round, who retired in the fifth set of the match with the flu.

1. James Blake (No. 87)

James Blake is 4-7 so far this year after going 4-7 last year. He's 59-40 lifetime in Grand Slams, and 31-27 on grass, but he's 7-10 at Wimbledon. The 27-year-old has never advanced past the third round at Wimbledon, and was bounced from the first round last year.

After defeating world No. 93 Thiemo de Bakker in straight sets in the first round, Blake faces fiery world No. 59 Bernard Tomic in the second round.

Tomic is coming off a five-set victory over top-ranked American Sam Querrey in the first round. The 20-year-old has a chance to defeat his second straight American on Thursday.
