Roland Garros 2013: Analyzing Title Chances of Remaining Players in Women's Draw

Mike ChiariJun 8, 2018

A large and talented field of women has been whittled down to just four at the French Open.

Serena Williams is slated to face Sara Errani and Maria Sharapova will take on Victoria Azarenka for an opportunity to play in the final.

While Williams is the world's No. 1 player and the odds-on favorite to win her second French Open championship, Errani, Sharapova and Azarenka can't be dismissed. All of them have had various degrees of success at Roland Garros, and this tournament is far from a foregone conclusion.

Williams, Sharapova and Azarenka have all won multiple Grand Slams, and even though Errani has yet to break through, she has made significant strides over the past year and definitely deserves to be in this position.

Here is a complete breakdown of all four singles players remaining in the women's draw at Roland Garros, including predictions for how they will fair in the semifinals as well as the final.

Serena Williams

No player in women's or men's tennis has been more dominant over the past year than Williams. Since being upset by Virginie Razzano in the first round at last year's French Open, Williams has won Wimbledon and the U.S. Open as well as two gold medals in the London Olympics. If not for a back injury, she very well could have won the Australian Open too.

Williams has lost just two matches all year and has won five titles already. Serena blew through the first four rounds at Roland Garros as she didn't drop more than three games in a single set.

Williams was tested by former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals, though, as Serena dropped the second set. Williams showed great resilience in hanging on to win, though, and revealed her secret to success on Twitter.

It's quite amazing that Williams may be playing her best tennis at the age of 31 as most players are on the decline by that point. Serena is clearly driven, however, and is out to make sure that a loss such as the won she suffered to Razzano last year doesn't happen again.

Serena has only won the French Open once and there is no doubt that she wants to win it again. Errani will be a pesky opponent for her in the semis, but look for Williams to come away victorious before ultimately winning it all.

Sara Errani

Williams, Sharapova and Azarenka are considered by most to be the "Big Three" in women's tennis, but Errani has been making a case to join that exclusive group.

She likely won't be mentioned in the same breath until she wins a Grand Slam, but she'll have an opportunity to do so at Roland Garros. Errani is clearly the biggest underdog remaining; however, she has proven her detractors wrong on many occasions already.

Errani made a statement last year as she made it to the French Open final, and even though Sharapova defeated her, she earned a lot of respect. Errani has continued to improve since then as she is now the No. 5 player in the world.

Errani is 31-13 this year and has a title to her credit as well. Her success has a lot to do with her determination and will to win. Drew Lawrence of Sports Illustrated astutely compared her to the No. 5 player on the men's side in David Ferrer.

As great as it is to see Errani in such high-profile situations, it is difficult to imagine her winning the French Open title this year. Her win over No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals was impressive, but now she has to go through Williams and either Sharapova or Azarenka to prevail.

Errani will definitely make Serena work; however, Williams' immense power and experience will overwhelm the Italian spark plug.

Maria Sharapova

Through four rounds of play, defending French Open Champion Maria Sharapova seemed poised to breeze into the final at Roland Garros. She didn't drop a single set and was never really tested throughout.

That changed on Wednesday, though, as Jelena Jankovic shocked Sharapova by taking the first set 6-0. Sharapova showed her mettle, however, as she came back to beat Jankovic in three hard-fought sets, according to Roland Garros on Twitter.

Surviving such a difficult match could ultimately be a good thing for Sharapova as she is now fully engaged in the tournament. Sharapova has always been a mentally-tough player and she put that quality to the test against Jankovic.

Sharapova will face a much different test in the semifinals as she will go head-to-head with Azarenka. They have had some great battles in recent years and will engage in what promises to be a hard-hitting affair.

Because of the fact that Sharapova is the defending French Open champion and since she has had more success on clay than Azarenka, her chances of reaching the final are pretty good. Once Sharapova gets there, though, all bets are off.

Sharapova is 30-4 this year and three of those losses have come against Serena. Sharapova did manage to take a set against Williams at the Sony Open, but Serena hasn't had much of an issue with her. In order to win back-to-back titles at Roland Garros, Sharapova needs to play the best match of her life.

Victoria Azarenka

As the two-time defending Australian Open champion, Azarenka has established herself as one of the best female players in tennis today. Azarenka had never gotten past the quarterfinals at Roland Garros prior to this year, but she exorcised some demons by beating Maria Kirilenko on Wednesday in order to reach the semis.

While there have been some nervous moments for Azarenka throughout the tournament, she still managed to achieve her best French Open result.

Making it to the semifinals is a big step, but it's doubtful that the Belarusian star is satisfied with that. She already has a taste of Grand Slam success, so she'll be looking to add to her trophy case at Roland Garros.

She and Sharapova are pretty evenly matched, so their contest should be an entertaining one. Azarenka is already looking forward to it and knows what she has to do in order to knock off the defending champion, according to Roland Garros on Twitter.

Being the aggressor against Sharapova is easier said than done. Azarenka has been able to do it in the past, though, so she shouldn't be counted out. Although it's more likely that Sharapova will advance to the final, Azarenka is a definite threat.

Even if Azarenka makes it to the final, though, the likelihood of beating Serena is quite low. Williams has been playing like a women possessed and she won't be denied her second French Open title.
