Predictions for Monday's Top Matches
Novak Djokovic (1) vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber (16)
Novak Djokovic is 2-1 lifetime against Philipp Kohlschreiber, but, interestingly enough, his sole loss to the 29-year-old came in the Round of 32 at the 2009 French Open.
Still, that was in 2009, and this is now. Djokovic was 28-4 with three singles titles coming into the 2013 French Open. Kohlschreiber was 15-10.
Kohlschreiber hasn't faced anyone of note so far in the tournament, while Djokovic is coming off a convincing straight-set victory over No. 26 seed Grigor Dimitrov.
I don't expect Kohlschreiber to defeat Djokovic this time around at Roland Garros.
Prediction: Djokovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3
Rafael Nadal (3) vs. Kei Nishikori (13)
Rafael Nadal is doing what we thought he would do in search of his eighth career French Open title. While his matches against Daniel Brands, Martin Klizan and No. 27 seed Fabio Fognini weren't perfect, the 26-year-old Spaniard is getting the job done.
Not a whole lot suggests Nishikori can win this match. Nadal was 36-2 with six singles titles this year headed into Roland Garros, and Nishikori has yet to defeat the great in four career matches. Nadal has defeated Nishikori in their last two matches, 6-4, 6-4.
After a long-winded affair against Benoit Paire that included a 67-minute second set, don't expect Nishikori to upset Nadal at Roland Garros.
Prediction: Nadal 6-4, 7-5, 6-4
Maria Sharapova (2) vs. Sloane Stephens (17)
Sloane Stephens, a 20-year-old with a wealth of potential, will take on French Open defending champion Maria Sharapova on Sunday.
Stephens, who came into the tournament 16-12, won her first three matches of this year's French Open against Karin Knapp, Vania King and Marina Erakovic. She's beaten both Williams sisters this year, including Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
On the other hand, Sharapova was 30-4 with two singles titles headed into the French Open. She has yet to drop a set at Roland Garros this year. She is 2-0 lifetime against Stephens, never having lost a set against the young American.
Stephens certainly has promise, but Sharapova has too much experience for the 20-year-old.
Prediction: Sharapova 6-4, 7-5
Richard Gasquet (7) vs. Stanislas Wawrinka (9)
Richard Gasquet and Stanislas Wawrinka have only faced each other once, and that was in 2006 in Paris. Gasquet won that matchup, 7-5, 6-1.
The gap has considerably narrowed since then. Gasquet is ranked No. 9 in the world, while Wawrinka is ranked No. 10. Gasquet was 25-8 with two singles titles headed into Roland Garros. Wawrinka was 26-9 with one singles title. Both have splendid one-handed backhands.
Gasquet has yet to lose a set in the 2013 French Open. Wawrinka has dropped two sets so far, but he also faced better competition.
This is a very difficult match to predict. The difference for me is that Wawrinka has shown he can step up to the challenge this season, with four wins over top-10 opponents (Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych). I think the 28-year-old puts pressure on the Frenchman, ultimately winning in five sets.
Prediction: Wawrinka 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4
