French Open 2013: Serena Williams Is Sunday's Big Winner at Roland Garros

Alex KayJun 8, 2018

Serena Williams continued her incredible run through the 2013 French Open, pushing her winning streak to 28 total games with a 6-1, 6-3 romp past Roberta Vinci on Sunday.

The victory over the No. 15-seeded opponent makes it 28 straight for Williams, the world’s No. 1 player and odds-on favorite to capture the title at Roland Garros.

While the American didn’t drop a set to her Italian counterpart, Vinci did represent the staunchest competition that Williams has faced since touching down in Paris.

After destroying Anna Tatishvili in the first round in just 51 minutes and taking a shade over an hour to knock out Caroline Garcia and Sorana Cirstea in the next two matchups, Williams needed 70 minutes to eliminate Vinci.

With a quarterfinal matchup looming against Svetlana Kuznetsova—the 2009 champion in this event—the 31-year-old favorite is still sitting pretty. She’s only lost 10 total games over the course of her four matches, a ridiculous display of dominance on the clay.

Williams is now 20-0 on the surface this year and looks poised to capture her second title at Roland Garros—the one Grand Slam that always seems to elude her, as she hasn’t won the event since 2002.

Despite her advancing age, the superstar is still at the top of her game and hasn’t missed a beat since faltering in the first round of this event last year. She went on to win major competitions at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Olympics before falling just short at the 2013 Australian Open.

That stumble in Melbourne—plus a shortcoming at the Qatar Total Open finals against Victoria Azarenka—may have provided the motivation for Williams to dominate clay season.

Williams has yet to lose a match since withdrawing from the Dubai Tennis Championships in late February and may not drop another one the rest of the year if she keeps up this level of play.

Don’t be surprised if Williams quickly dispatches Kuznetsova in straight sets and continues her amazing run through to the finals of the 2013 French Open.
