Wayne Rooney's Top Rumored Destinations This Summer

Justin OnslowMay 29, 2013

Wayne Rooney is nearing an acrimonious split from Manchester United and it’s only a matter of time before the situation reaches a boiling point.

The striker has twice asked for a dismissal from Old Trafford, brought on by a combination of his distaste for spending a lot of time out of position and not seeing enough time on the pitch.

Despite another Premier League championship this term, Rooney appears to be on his way out and retiring boss Sir Alex Ferguson apparently has no interest in hearing about it any longer, as quoted by Neil Custis of The Sun:

"

I have no idea. It is not my department. I am no longer interested in that. David (Moyes) is going to deal with that. Quite rightly he wants to deal with that and I’m happy with that.

"

Ferguson isn’t alone in not wanting to deal with Rooney’s drama any longer. The 27-year-old has been a key contributor since joining United in 2004, but he’s no longer worth the headache he constantly produces with his me-first attitude.

Still, the talent is there and there are sure to be a number of clubs interested in striking a deal for the forward—among them, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG

According to Custis, Paris Saint-Germain is most interested in acquiring Rooney’s services this summer:

"

But it is clear now that the retiring boss has grown tired of Rooney. There have been no moves to offer him a new contract with just two years left on his present deal.

United would entertain offers of £25 million, with Paris Saint-Germain most interested in taking him.

"

Telegraph Sport reported the same news on Twitter May 13, suggesting the interest is mutual and a deal could be in the works:

It’s no surprise a high-profile target like Rooney would draw interest from a top-tier club in any European league. If PSG is willing to shell out the money to acquire him (as well as his weekly £250,000 wages), this could be a very likely scenario.

However, the French side will have some competition, potentially from a top EPL club like Arsenal.

Arsenal

According to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, Arsenal is unwilling to abandon the idea of pursuing Rooney, despite the cost of bringing him aboard for an extended stay at Arsenal:

"

Arsenal is growing increasingly confident they can finance a record-breaking move for Wayne Rooney.

Sportmail exclusively revealed the Gunners’ interest in the unsettled Manchester United star last week.

A move for Rooney was first discussed in a scouting meeting in March, but there was an acknowledgement that his £250,000-per-week wages could be a stretch too far for the club.

"

Mokbel also believes the Gunners hope to give the striker a new five-year deal that would lower Rooney’s weekly allowance in exchange for a “multi-million pound signing-on fee.”

Arsenal is prepared to spend this summer, after securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Arsene Wenger finally pulled the strings on a big deal for a player of Rooney’s caliber—especially if attempts at Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic fall through.

It was former Arsenal forward Robin van Persie that necessitated Rooney’s position change at Old Trafford. It would be an ironic twist of fate for the latter to flip sides and face United on a squad he terrorized for more than a decade.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will be willing to do more than talk, however. As has been the case all too often in recent years, Wenger may be more likely to balk at the deal than he is to follow through on a £25 million move.
