Manchester United and Arsenal were among teams picking up unwanted injuries this weekend in the Premier League.
United defender Nemanja Vidic picked up a knee problem during the win over Liverpool, while fellow centre-half Jonny Evans missed the game after suffering a hamstring injury in training on Saturday.
England international Ashley Young limped out of the 2-1 win over the Merseysiders with a knee injury.
Arsenal were dealt a blow ahead of their defeat by Manchester City when midfielder Mikel Arteta was ruled out with a calf problem.
Southampton and Wigan suffered their own injury problems at the weekend as they prepare for a crucial second half of the season at the foot of the table.
Manchester United
1 of 5Manchester United maintained their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Liverpool, but the victory came at a cost.
Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic, who has only recently returned from a serious knee problem, appeared to suffer the injury after an aerial challenge in the 65th minute of the game but played on until 10 minutes before the end, when he was replaced by Chris Smalling.
Winger Ashley Young, who left Old Trafford on crutches, was hurt in a challenge with Liverpool defender Daniel Agger in the first half and did not return to the field after the interval.
Both Vidic and Young are likely to miss the midweek FA Cup third-round replay against West Ham United and the Premier League trip to Tottenham next weekend.
United defender Jonny Evans was forced to pull out of the game after picking up a hamstring injury following training on Saturday.
The Northern Ireland international is also expected to miss the cup tie against the Hammers.
Striker Wayne Rooney, however, is on the way back to action after recovering from the knee injury he suffered in training on Christmas Day.
Arsenal
2 of 5Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta will be missing for three weeks after picking up a calf strain in training during the week.
The 30-year-old missed the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday and Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is looking at potential replacements during the transfer window this month.
The former Everton player has been a mainstay in the Arsenal midfield this season and was replaced by Abou Diaby for the visit of the reigning Premier League champions at the weekend.
Diaby made his first competitive start since Sept. 29 after a long-term thigh problem.
Wigan Athletic
3 of 5Wigan Athletic were dealt a huge blow to their Premier League survival hopes after defender Ivan Ramis picked up a serious injury at Fulham on Saturday.
The 28-year-old suffered a knee ligament injury during the 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage and manager Roberto Martinez is bracing himself for bad news.
The Spaniard was carried from the field in the closing stages of the game and could miss the rest of the season.
Southampton
4 of 5Southampton are likely to be without Luke Shaw for the midweek trip to Chelsea after the left-back suffered a badly gashed knee during the win at Aston Villa on Saturday.
The 17-year-old was carried off during the closing stages of the game at Villa Park where Rickie Lambert scored the only goal of the game.
Shaw signed a new deal with the club last week after being strongly linked with a move to Arsenal during this transfer window.
Manchester City
5 of 5Manchester City have been handed an injury boost with midfielder Jack Rodwell nearing a return to action after over three months on the sidelines.
The 21-year-old has not played for City since September due to hamstring problems but is expecting to return to action in two weeks.
City manager Roberto Mancini has lost the services of midfielder Yaya Toure to African Nations Cup duty with the Ivory Coast and will welcome the return of the England international, who has struggled to make an impact since his £12 million move from Everton in the summer.
