Why This Is the Most Exciting Season in BCS History
With only a couple more seasons of the BCS left in play, you knew it had to go out with a bang before leaving us with a playoff system. This happens to be that year, as there are many things to be excited about if you are in favor of the format and enjoy seeing the top teams picked by computers.
Last season was a mess for the BCS, as people simply couldn't wrap their head around two teams from the same conference appearing in the national championship game. But then again, what season hasn't been a disaster for the BCS? Fans will always find something to complain about and criticize when it comes to this topic.
This year the stars are aligned and the BCS is all giggly in the background, as 2012 has been the most exciting season for the BCS and the college football gods have made sure it went out with a season to remember.
Undefeated Galore
1 of 6The more great teams there are atop the BCS rankings, the better for BCS and college football as a whole. We are only a few weeks away from the regular season coming to an end and conference championships taking place, and we still have five teams that are undefeated, including four of the teams at the very top of the poll.
An undefeated regular season in today's college football is considered magical due to all of the stiff competition each and every team has to play. We could possibly see five in the same year, which would simply be unheard of.
And you can't forget Ohio State, who is also sitting pretty with an undefeated record, but not in the BCS due to a one-year postseason bowl ban. If the Buckeyes weren't on punishment, the BCS may have exploded due to all of the excitement that would have brought.
Still, five teams is good enough, and it will lead to something spectacular if it remains that way through the remainder of the regular season.
Who Reaches the Title Game?
2 of 6Oh, controversy.
Ever since the BCS was first introduced back in 1998, there has always been a dispute with trying to find the right two teams to play for the national championship.
We have seen undefeated teams get left out in the cold before. We have seen teams not win their own conference and make the big game. Teams from the same conference have played for the national championship before and many believe there is a bias towards the SEC when making the decisions for who participates.
Well, let there be five undefeated teams when the season comes to a close and see how that works out for the BCS.
Would you really leave out Alabama, who is last year’s champion? Kansas State has beaten some tough teams and has a Heisman Trophy front-runner at quarterback. Would you leave out Oregon, who is simply destroying teams and looking just as good as the Crimson Tide at the moment? Notre Dame speaks for itself, as it is a prestigious program that would help the BCS sell out its bowl game in a heartbeat.
And as crazy as it sounds, you can't overlook Louisville, who has also ran the table up to this point and continues to make much progress in the polls.
Five possible teams without a loss and only two teams that can earn a trip to Miami. Who do you pick to make it the big dance and why?
Isn’t an undefeated record worth the same as another undefeated record?
Oh, the controversy, this is what the BCS loves.
Notre Dame Is Back
3 of 6If having a million undefeated teams wasn't enough for the BCS to profit off of, Notre Dame is back in the national spotlight. The prayers have been answered from up above, as this is probably the biggest thing to happen to this broken system.
Notre Dame has had a struggling program the last several years and has only won two bowl games since the 1993 season. The Irish have made three BCS bowl games, but have lost every one of them and haven't even been part of the BCS since the 2007 season.
However, the BCS likely doesn't care how Notre Dame performs under the bright lights; the system just wants those leprechauns to be a part of the action. The Irish are one of the most storied programs in the history of college football and will bring a massive crowd, which includes thousands of faithful Notre Dame fans that will travel to see their team play.
This means more money and higher ratings for the BCS, which is always a good thing when you are the one on the benefiting side of things.
As long as there isn't a historic collapse, Notre Dame will be in some type of big game, and the BCS couldn't be happier.
Florida State Is Almost Back
4 of 6Florida State blew its chance for a national championship with an upsetting loss to North Carolina State. But the team is still in the Top 10 with an 8-1 record and should be considered the favorites to run the remaining table and win the ACC.
This would put the Seminoles in a BCS bowl game for the first time since 2005, which was the year Bobby Bowden somehow won the ACC with an 8-4 record. Florida State may still be a year or two away from competing for titles once again, but having it in the national spotlight is good enough for the BCS.
There are certain programs in college football that we are used to seeing on top, and when those schools do well, it makes college football better overall. Notre Dame is one of those teams and Florida State should be considered one of them as well, as there is quite a bit of history that comes with the Seminoles.
Seeing both teams on the rise at the same time is astonishing as far as the BCS is concerned.
Kansas State Is Where?!
5 of 6Usually the only smaller program that would give the BCS a run for its money was Boise State or some below-average Big East program. This season, that team that is making a serious run for a national championship is Kansas State.
The Wildcats may have been around for quite some time, but they certainly aren't used to any big-time success. We are talking about a program that has only appeared in 15 bowl games in its history, has an overall losing record and has only produced 11 consensus All-Americans.
Kansas State has a consistent tradition of being in the AP Poll recently, but nobody thought the Wildcats would be undefeated and the No. 2 team in the country.
While the BCS has always tried its best to keep the little guy down, it has never stopped those programs from at least trying to make a run. With Boise State out of the picture, it happens to be Bill Snyder's club that stepped in and took its place for a season.
Now, will they make it all the way to the title game this year?
That question can't be answered right now, but it is at least fun seeing them try.
SEC Is Still Dominating
6 of 6What would the BCS be without the SEC?
It has created a rivalry between fans of the dominating conference and the other guys that can't stand the success.
The SEC has racked up 16 overall victories in BCS history, which is more than any other conference in college football. It includes eight national championship wins, including the last six championship games that have been won by an SEC program. It's the conference that has benefited the most from the BCS, and many can't stand the conference down south because of all its achievements.
This year, there are five SEC teams just in the Top 10 and six overall in the Top 25. With so many teams from one conference at the top, it is almost a certainty that the winner of this conference will return to the national championship game for a seventh straight year.
And this is why college football fans across the country live to hate the SEC.
