NCAA Football Rankings: Hits and Misses from Week 4 Polls

Jake MartinJun 3, 2018

For the most part, the polls reflected the action that unfolded in Week 3 quite well.

In the AP Poll, they pretty much nailed the Top 10 teams, and teams that have yet to really dazzle college football fans, like Ohio State, dropped in the poll.

As for the USA Today Coaches' Poll, they placed Oklahoma State back in the Top 25, which is where they belong.

But there's always room for improvement. It may be nitpicking, but here are the misses to go along with the hits from the Week 4 Polls.

Hit: The AP Top 5

1 of 7

The AP Poll absolutely nailed the Top 5 teams.

After just three weeks of college football action, it's apparent that Alabama and LSU are the two best teams in the country, and if any team should be considered among them, it's Oregon.

This may be the best team Chip Kelly's ever had, as Marcus Mariota compliments De'Anthony Thomas and Kenjon Barner extremely well.

Following Alabama, LSU and Oregon is Florida State, who dismantled Wake Forest 52-0 and has won every game by 50+ points.

And coming in at No. 5 is a Georgia team that's coming off of a huge win against Missouri in Week 2, and when they have all the pieces of the puzzle together, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.

Miss: Texas No. 10 in Coaches' Poll and No. 12 in AP Poll

2 of 7

The verdict is still out about the Texas Longhorns.

What exactly have they done this year to warrant a No. 10 or No. 12 ranking?

The Longhorns defeated Wyoming 37-17, blew out New Mexico 45-0 and gave up 31 points to an Ole Miss team that scored 28 against UTEP. Isn't defense supposed to be this team's forte?

Longhorns back? Eh, slow your roll.

Let's see how they fare against Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Oklahoma before we jump to any drastic conclusions.

Hit: Ohio State, TCU and Michigan Dropping Spots

3 of 7

Ohio State, TCU and Michigan all dropped in the AP Poll, as they should have.

Ohio State went from being ranked No. 12 to No. 16, while TCU and Michigan dropped one spot and are ranked 17th and 18th respectively.

The Buckeyes deserved to drop four spots in the rankings because they barely beat the Cal Bears and continue to show holes, while Stanford, Florida and Notre Dame deserved to jump them in polls after impressive victories over ranked opponents. Kansas State jumping them after beating North Texas just 35-21 is debatable.

As for TCU, they beat Kansas 20-6 in an unimpressive showing, but it was a win nonetheless. The Horned Frogs' four turnovers against the Jayhawks were unacceptable.

And Michigan finally got an impressive win with a 63-13 victory against Massachusetts. That makes for one impressive victory on the season, yet they still managed to be a top-20 team. Makes a lot of sense, right? Hey, at least they dropped a spot this week.

Miss: Kansas State Ranked Ahead of Florida in Coaches' Poll

4 of 7

The crowd gathered at Neyland Stadium for the biggest Florida/Tennessee game in years. Many believed the Vols were back with Tyler Bray gun-slinging to Justin Hunter and Cordarrelle Patterson.

Florida didn't care. Florida marched in there, weathered the storm and took over the game in the second half. It was as if we were watching a replay of their encounter against Texas A&M.

With defense leading the way and Jeff Driskel playing with a newly found confidence, Florida won the game 37-20.

At the same time, Kansas State was in an intense battle with North Texas. The Wildcats pulled away late and won the game 35-21, but a game that close against North Texas shouldn't allow a team to move up in the polls.

Kansas State is ranked one spot ahead of Florida in the USA Today Coaches' Poll at No. 13, and quite frankly, that makes absolutely no sense.

Hit: Virginia Tech Falling out of the Polls

5 of 7

If you're going to do it to Arkansas, it's only fair to do the same to Virginia Tech.

After Arkansas lost to UL-Monroe, the Hogs fell from No. 8 in the AP Poll to unranked. Following Virginia Tech's mind-boggling loss to Pittsburgh, the Hokies dropped from No. 13 to unranked.

"Wait is this guy really comparing ULM to Pittsburgh," Virginia Tech fans clamor. My response to that is have you seen Pittsburgh this season?

Sure, Ray Graham's a stud, but the rest of the team has played absolutely terribly in the first two weeks of the season.

This team lost to Youngstown State in the first week and played abysmally against Cincinnati in Week 2. There's no reason Virginia Tech should have lost to an 0-2 Pittsburgh Panther team, but this seems to be the trend every year for Frank Beamer's club.

Miss: Boise State No. 24 in AP Poll

6 of 7

Hold the phone.

How in the world did Boise State lose to Michigan State in Week 1, beat Miami (OH) last Saturday 39-12 and somehow find their way back into the Top 25?

Because of the storied success of programs around the landscape of college football, teams are awarded with high rankings because of what they've done in the past, and that's the only reasonable explanation for Boise State being ranked at No. 24.

This team is 1-1, and after the team that beat them was dominated physically by Notre Dame Saturday night, how in the world could voters justify voting for Boise State?

Hit: UCLA Breaks Top 20 in Both Polls

7 of 7

UCLA has a very good football team.

The Bruins have a talented quarterback in Brett Hundley, who can run and throw, and they have a dark horse Heisman candidate in running back Johnathan Franklin.

But more importantly, this team is efficient on the field.

UCLA has won all three of their games this season, including a 36-30 upset against Nebraska.

After the Bruins defeated Houston 37-6, this team earned a Top 20 ranking and both polls obliged.
