NFL Power Rankings Week 1: Updated Super Bowl Odds for Each Team

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

It's never too early to talk Super Bowl.

Yes, we are only one week into the season, but if 2018 NFL mock drafts are already being released, then it's really not too early for anything.

Another good reason for early Super Bowl talk? Betting. If you're in to that sort of thing, putting your money on a title contender this early in the season can be extremely beneficial—or in most cases, not at all—for you bank account.

Let's take a look at my updated power rankings and Super Bowl odds

1. New England Patriots (1-0): 5/1

The Pats' secondary still needs plenty of work, but man, that front seven looked especially dangerous against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Not only did it hold Chris Johnson to four yards on 11 carries, it sacked the mobile Jack Locker twice, forced him into a fumble and separated his shoulder.

Combine that new and improved front seven with Tom Brady and his never-ending arsenal of weapons (hey, they can run the ball now, too! Uh-oh) and you have a scary team.

Well, scary for all 31 other teams.

2. San Francisco 49ers (1-0): 6/1

Was there a more impressive win in Week 1? San Francisco's defense made Aaron Rodgers look like Tony Romo (he was still good, just not Aaron Rodgers good).

Additionally, Alex Smith didn't seem interested in playing in game-manager mode, as he looked comfortable slinging the ball around. Should the 49ers offense continue to look as fast as it did in Week 1, watch out.

3. Baltimore Ravens (1-0): 13/2

I always thought Joe Flacco's power resided in his mustache. But the 'stache is gone and suddenly he looks like the elite quarterback he's been touting himself as all summer long.

4. Green Bay Packers (0-1): 9/1

I'm not writing off the Packers quite yet. Once they get past Murderer's Row on their schedule (they now host the Bears after hosting the 'Niners. Lucky them), they should be fine.

That defense, though, needs work. It's possible to out-gun everyone to the Super Bowl, especially with A-Rod under center, just not very easy.

5. Houston Texans (1-0): 10/1

Without a doubt, this is the best Super Bowl contender flying under the radar.

The defense, just like last year, is still fast and adept at what you would call play-making (three sacks, three interceptions, three forced fumbles), Matt Schaub is healthy, Andre Johnson is healthy, Arian Foster runs over people, so does Ben Tate.

Yes, please.

6. Chicago Bears (1-0): 14/1

Hard to tell where they really belong after their beatdown of the Indianapolis Colts. We'll get a better indication after Week 2, but Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall's friendship looks unbreakable.

You don't mess with friendship.

7. Denver Broncos (1-0): 16/1

Also known as the Dendiapolis Broncolts.

Peyton Manning looks to be in fine health, and as long as he stays upright for most of the season, he's going to be partying like it's 2006—or whatever year you want to call his best—as he turns this offense into his own.

8. Dallas Cowboys (1-0): 17/1

Still worried about the lack of depth for a team that always seems to be on the bad side of the injury Gods, but the first-string talent is legitimate.

Just ask Victor Cruz, who I'm pretty sure is still hearing footsteps.

9. Atlanta Falcons (1-0): 17/1

Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Julio Jones.

They torched a banged up, deflated Kansas City secondary in Week 1, sure, but that's a trio that not many teams are going to be able to stop this season.

10. New York Giants (0-1): 20/1

This is a toughie.

On one hand, the G-Men were throttled by the Cowboys in Week 1 at home. The secondary looked atrocious, and it's hard to win many games when you can't stop anyone in the air.

On the other hand, New York always gets off to slow starts, then inevitably looks like a playoff squad later in the year, so dropping them too far in the rankings would be a mistake.

I'm going to go with that second hand for a couple of weeks. Eli Manning is still Eli Manning, and that defensive line is still going to make things easier on the secondary.

Don't sell quite yet. Just don't buy, either. They are the Bluth Family Business of the NFL.

11. Philadelphia Eagles (1-0): 21/1

The Eagles could have four Nnamdi Asomughas, two LeSean McCoys and three DeSean Jacksons, but if Andy Reid is going to let a rusty, not-so-good-at-throwing Michael Vick toss the ball 60 times per game, bad things are going to happen.

12. Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1): 22/1

Ben Roethlisberger looks to be in mid-season form already, but that defense just isn't scaring anyone anymore.

The Ravens are clearly the team to beat in the AFC North.

13. Washington Redskins (1-0): 30/1

Because Mike Shanahan is making things easy on Robert Griffin III, and when you make things easy on RGIII, he makes things easy on you.

Or something like that.

Throw in a solid defense and running game, and this overreaction isn't so overreaction-y. I believe!

14. New Orleans Saints (0-1): 30/1

Was Sean Payton really that important?

Maybe, but I think it's more the fact that the secondary can't stop guys like Aldrick Robinson and Logan Paulsen. That could just be me, though.

Drew Brees might throw for 9,000 yards this season with that defense getting him into shootouts every week.

15. New York Jets (1-0): 33/1

TEEEBOWWWWW!!!!

Oh, wait, you mean, after everything that happened this summer, he's not someone who will have a huge impact on games? Weird.

No matter, though, because Mark Sanchez looked impressive and Rex Ryan's defense is always a force to be reckoned with. The arrow is pointing up here.

16. San Diego Chargers (1-0): 33/1

The Kaedings slipped passed the Janikowskis on Monday night, but I'm still not exactly convinced this offensive line can give Philip Rivers enough time to be fully effective.

The return of Ryan "I'm missing a "T" in my last name" Mathews should certainly help balance things out, though.

17. Detroit Lions (1-0): 33/1

A win is a win.

Unless, of course, your all-important quarterback throws three interceptions and you need a bunch of field goals and a last-second drive to get that win against the St. Louis Rams.

18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0): 60/1

I've always thought this team was going to have a season closer to 2010 than 2011, and Week 1's win over the Carolina Panthers was a good start.

Doug Martin is the real deal, and Josh Freeman just needs to manage the game and limit turnovers. That should be beneficial for everyone involved.

19. Carolina Panthers (0-1): 66/1

Because I'm riding out this Cam Newton bandwagon, even if it drives over a cliff.

It was hardly a good sophomore debut for Newton (two INTs, four rushing yards), but on the plus side, the defense looked much improved and Jonathan Stewart should be back soon to ease the running game's pain.

20. Seattle Seahawks (0-1): 75/1

My man-crush on Russell Wilson is still Simmons-esque, and that's not going to be deterred by his first-ever NFL road game, which he should have won if not for some untimely dropped passes.

Besides, Seattle's large, athletic defense and that guy who likes Skittles will continue to take the pressure off the rookie.

21. Arizona Cardinals (1-0): 80/1

Maybe, just maybe, John Skelton should take the first snap of every game because Kevin Kolb looked tremendous coming off the bench.

That could be his thing!

The defense is also extremely underrated.

22. Tennessee Titans (0-1): 85/1

The Patriots are going to make a lot of teams look like that in 2012, so Tennessee fans shouldn't worry too much. I liked what I saw from Jake Locker and wouldn't be surprised to see the Titans move up from this spot very soon.

23. Cincinnati Bengals (0-1): 100/1

In case you were wondering, Andy Dalton isn't quite all he's cracked up to be. Just take a look at this painful stat (via Rotoworld's Evan Silva):

"

Andy Dalton's last 10 games: 8 touchdowns, 13 turnovers. #Bengals are 3-7 with wins over only Rams, Browns, and Cardinals.

— Evan Silva (@evansilva) September 11, 2012"

Ouch.

24. Kansas City Chiefs (0-1): 125/1

Once the defense gets back to full strength, the pressure can go back to sitting on Matt Cassel's shoulders.

Yay?

25. Buffalo Bills (0-1): 125/1

Remember how much the Fred Jackson injury hurt the Bills last year? Well, the dynamic running back is out for at least four weeks.

C.J. Spiller is a nice backup weapon, but there's no question that Buffalo will miss their veteran in the backfield.

26. Oakland Raiders (0-1): 125/1

Fix the special teams and open up some holes for Darren McFadden in the run game, and then we'll talk.

27. Minnesota Vikings (1-0): 150/1

Adrian Peterson is Superman. I'm convinced.

28. St. Louis Rams (0-1): 200/1

The Rams left Detroit with a loss, but it was one of the more encouraging losses of the weekend, especially from a defensive standpoint.

This team is headed in the right direction under Jeff Fisher.

29. Indianapolis Colts (0-1): 200/1

One of the things I'm looking forward to most in Week 2 is to watch Andrew Luck again.

Plenty of critics are pooping on his Week 1 performance, but it was an NFL debut on the road at Soldier Field. Not many guys will throw for 309 yards, no matter how inefficient, in that setting.

No first pick for these guys!

30. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1): 250/1

The Jags actually did better than I expected in Week 1 at Minnesota.

Blaine Gabbert quietly threw for 260 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions and one (almost) game-winning drive.

31. Miami Dolphins (0-1): 250/1

Ryan Tannehill isn't quite ready. Teams are stealing snap counts from Hard Knocks. Brian Hartline was the leading receiver.

This team still has lots of problems.

32. Cleveland Browns (0-1): 250/1

But not as many as this team!

Until Brandon Weeden shows us something different, teams are going to be putting about 11 guys in the box against Trent Richardson, and the Browns aren't going to be able to score enough to win games.
