Christian Hackenberg vs. Robert Nkemdiche: Odds Either 5-Star Stud Decommits

Andrew KulhaJun 7, 2018

5-star defensive end and No. 1 overall prospect Robert Nkemdiche and 5-star quarterback Christian Hackenberg are both committed—to Clemson and Penn State respectively—but there is good reason to believe that one or both of their commitments may not last.

Even though both have a verbal commitment to their schools, nothing is official until national signing day. That means there is still time for them to change their minds or be swayed by another program, other prospects or even friends and family.

What are the odds of either or both of these 5-star studs decomitting? Let's break it down.

Christian Hackenberg: 5-Star QB, Fork Union Military HS, VA.

At 6'4'',  210 pounds Hackenberg has the size that every college football program in the nation covets, and he backs it up with an extremely strong, accurate arm and good pocket presence.

He committed to Penn State in February and remains committed even through the NCAA sanctions that have essentially crippled the Nittany Lions' program in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Will he end up leaving?

It would be an easy decision considering the 4-year bowl ban and loss of scholarships Penn State will have to endure. Loss of scholarships means that head coach Bill O'Brien will have less of an opportunity to put great players around Hackenberg, which means the chances of winning decrease dramatically.

The kicker here is, if Hackenberg were to decommit, I feel as if it would have already happened—sometime closer to when the horror of the scandal was the top news on ESPN every day, or when the NCAA brought the hammer down on Penn State.

He hasn't left yet, so perhaps he's really buying into what O'Brien is trying to do with the remnants of the Penn State program.

Odds De Decommits: Slim

Robert Nkemdiche: 5-Star SDE, No. 1 overall prospect, Grayson HS, Georgia.

Nkemdiche is the most coveted player in the nation as far as the 2013 class is concerned, and even though he gave his verbal to Clemson back in June, many feel that it's not going to stick.

The pressure of being the No. 1 prospect is huge, so his decision is questioned at every turn he makes by everybody. While Clemson does have a good reputation for cranking out defensive ends into the NFL, why not go play for an SEC and national powerhouse like Alabama or LSU?

Nkemdiche has also been pretty forward about wanting to play with his high school teammates in college. Clemson made offers to Grayson running back Wayne Gallman and defensive back David Kamara, but Nkemdiche went as far to say that his commitment would be a "done deal" if the Tigers made an offer to Grayson safety Ryan Carter.

Clemson has still not made that offer.

Until he's signed, other school's can put the pressure on Nkemdiche, but to make it even worse, it was reported by Zach Schonbrun of ESPN The Magazine that his mother isn't happy about his commitment to Clemson either:

"

"His decision is not final," she says. "He's just a teenager, and people are forgetting that. We had never discussed Clemson, and I am unhappy with Clemson. I'm not there, so I don't know for certain, but I feel like Robert was pressured into this decision." She'll return later this fall to escort Robert onto the field for senior night.

"

All of this seems to be adding up to a perfect storm which will lead to Nkemdiche going back on his commitment to Clemson.

In the end, I believe the allure of the SEC spotlight plus the pressure of his mom being unhappy with his decision will be too much.

Odds He Decommits: Extremely High
