Peru vs. Argentina: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview 2014 World Cup

Ethan GrantSep 8, 2012

Argentina will travel to Lima, Peru in their quest for CONMEBOL supremacy in the next phase of World Cup 2014 qualifying when they take on the country in their next match.

Coming off a 3-1 win over Paraguay that extended their win streak to five matches, Argentina looks to push that number to six against a Peru squad that has only totaled six points in the standings so far.

Leading the CONMEBOL rankings, the Lionel Messi-led Argentinian squad currently sits with 13 points. Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay are all within striking distance, however, so it will be pivotal that the Argentinians not overlook a Peru team fresh off a 2-1 win of their own over Venezuela.

Preview

These two teams seem to be headed in opposite directions. Peru is coming off of a strong performance to avoid complete loss of contention, but is going to need a big day from their attackers and good defense on Argentinian strikers Messi and Gonzalo Higuain.

In the history of the two meetings, Peru forced a draw in 2008 but other than that haven't had much success against Argentina. The draw, however, did come in Lima, so maybe the home crowd will help the Peruvian effort and give them a home field advantage.

Argentina is in no danger of losing their top spot in their South American draw, but they haven't shut the door on being in Brazil just yet. A spirited effort in Lima puts their foot in the door.

World Cup Impact

Peru is going to have their hands full to claw their way from seventh, their current ranking in the points, up to fifth, which would force them into the international playoff. That clawing starts with an upset of Argentina.

For the Argentinians, strengthening their grip on the top spot is a goal here, as is developing more chemistry and playing tighter as a unit. This should be a fun one to watch, as the Argentinians make a push for some World Cup love as 2014 inches closer and closer.
