Thunder's Kevin Durant May Just Drop a Solo Rap Album on NBA-Mad World
Kevin Durant would very much like to push his luck well into the rap game.
The man who is masterful on the court is launching himself into a solo rap album that will no doubt greet other basketball stars' releases at the bottom of the bargain bin.
At least we think he is releasing a rap album.
The Washington Post's Michael Lee (h/t The Basketball Jones) catches up with Durant and asks him about his recent forays into hip hop:
"There has been a lot of buzz around Stephen Jackson’s new solo album coming out. Apparently you went to the studio and dropped a verse for him?
Yeah. I did. I enjoy doing a lot of different things. I’m a basketball player. That’s what I do and what I love but that’s just not all who I am. I’m talented in a lot of different areas. Rapping is one of those things I just enjoy doing. I have fun doing. Stephen Jackson is pretty good. He’s a nice rapper. ...Does it make you want to go in the studio and put out your own album?
"
I think I’m going to do something. I have some resources and some nice people that’s going to help me out. I have a studio in my house already. Maybe I might put out a little something and have a little something.
We have to agree with Trey Kerby of The Basketball Jones when he assumes the "I might put out a little something and have a little something" part means a solo album is due.
Oh boy.
Allow me to put on the hatin' jacket for just a spell. While Durant is a semi-accomplished rapper, we don't want to see him make the same mistake that every single athlete has made who entered a studio to drop some rhymes for a full album.
Don't believe me? Take a gander at BuzzFeed's list of rap albums by athletes gone awry, even featuring Durant in another venture.
Here's the thing: Durant has some game. You can hear him do rap justice in a recent recording with Privaledge.
Like his passable job in Thunderstruck, he should count his blessings and move on to his day job: being one of the best players in the NBA.
We smell trouble on the horizon, and it stinks like the pile of failed recordings put out by every other NBA star.
Say it ain't so, Durant.
