Champions League 2013 Qualifying: Playoff Round Results, Scores and Recap

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Dynamo Kiev, CFR Cluj-Napoca and Celtic all scored huge wins on away soil in the first leg of the playoff round for Champions League qualifying.

This stage of qualifying is two-legs, so the above teams will be heading home with the score already in their favor.

Spartak Moscow and FC Copenhagen successfully defended their home pitch, and there were no draws among the five contests on Tuesday.

Recap

Spartak Moscow 2, Fenerbahce 1

This match remained scoreless into the 59th minute, but Spartak striker Emmanuel Emenike put an end to that as he netted a score off a great assist from Dmitri Kombarov.

Determined to keep this one close, Fenerbahce's Dirk Kuyt grabbed a nice away goal just six minutes later.

However, they seemed to relax a bit after gaining a score and Spartak's  Kombarov delivered the final goal off of a corner.

Despite the loss, this was an impressive away performance for Fenerbahce.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1, Dynamo Kiev 3

Alexander Ring got things off to a great start for hosts Borussia Monchengladbach as he drilled a misdirection shot just inside the low post in the 13th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead.

It was all downhill from there as Dynamo Kiev began to dominate. Taras Mikhalik and Andriy Yarmolenko both netted goals to give their squad the lead heading into halftime.

Borussia controlled the match in the second half against a listless Dynamo Kiev, and the only goal was on own goal by Luuk de Jong to doom his squad to a two-goal deficit, and having to try and make that up on the road.

That is not a likely outcome.

FC Basel 1, CFR Cluj-Napoca 2

Things were rolling along smoothly for FC Basel in this match as Marco Streller scored right before half to give the home side a 1-0 lead—a lead they held until the 65th minute.

That is when Cluj-Napoca's Modou Sougou took over as he scored two in five minutes.

By that time, Basel's attack had grown listless and it couldn't do anything to level the score. The team is now faced with the task of making up at least one goal while on the road.

FC Copenhagen 1, Lille 0

Lille's Dimitri Payet lined up for a penalty in the 14th minute and blew it. At the time, the miss didn't seem like it would be as huge a deal as it ultimately proved to be.

While Lille did a good job with possession, it did not earn another great look on goal the rest of the way, and consequently earned the shutout.

Copenhagen's Cesar Santin did all of the scoring for the match in the 38th minute.

Helsingborg 0, Celtic 2

It took one minute for Celtic to net a key away goal, when Kris Commons got things off to a blazing start, and they controlled the match from there.

However, they couldn't turn that control into another goal until the 74th minute when Georgios Samaras netted the second, and that concluded the scoring.

It wouldn't take a total meltdown for Celtic not to hold onto a two-goal advantage on its home soil.
