English Premier League Uniform Malfunction: Anderson, McClean, Jelavic

Michael CummingsJun 7, 2018

Mistakes happen, especially in the world of writing and printing.

But while the power of the written word is lessened somewhat by typos, misspellings and pure carelessness, all the goofs can also be a whole lot of fun.

Take the English Premier League for example. During opening weekend, the league saw a number of uniform malfunctions that were as humorous to fans as they were embarrassing for printers.

Read on to see the opening-weekend goofs, along with a few entries from the all-time greats category.

Anderson

Anderson came on as a second-half substitute for Manchester United on Monday against Everton. For once, fans had a reason to stop hating United's ghastly gingham shirt.

The reason? Anderson's name was spelled "Andesron" on the back of his picnic tablecloth.

Hard to know which was worse.

Nikica Jelavic

Everton forward Nikica Jelavic took an elbow to the face during the same match Monday night, and after the collision there was blood on his jersey.

Naturally, Jelavic switched out his jersey as soon as he could. Surprisingly, though, Everton didn't have another jersey with his name and number on it.

So Jelavic played the rest of the match wearing a shirt with a blank back.

Tomas Kuszczak

In fairness, Polish names are hard for English-speaking people to spell.

What's with all the consonants? Does the "s" come before the "z"? Where does the "c" go?

With that said, there's no excuse for this mangling of former West Brom and Manchester United keeper Tomas Kuszczak's name.

Roque Santa Cruz

4 of 6

This is Roque Santa Cruz, a former Bayern Munich player who had his name misspelled by Blackburn Rovers.

Coincidentally, with one more strategic switch of letters, the man named for the holy crucifix could have had the name of the devil on his back.

David Bentley

5 of 6

Dear, dear. Who's running the printing press for Blackburn Rovers?

Maybe we should look at this another way.

Is this the real reason David Bentley's England career never went anywhere?

Crystal Palace

Everything up to this point has been bad. But all those errors have also been understandable.

This, however, is not.

How many people must have seen and approved this badge before Crystal Palace used it for the 2004-05 season?

A few dozen? Fifty? One hundred?

Apparently they needed a 101st spell-checker. Shocking.
