Champions Bowl Site: Who Has the Edge, SuperDome or Cowboys Stadium?

Randy ChambersAug 15, 2012

There are basically only two cities that will have any say in who hosts the Champions Bowl.

The Champions Bowl is a game that will pit the champion of the SEC and the champion of the Big 12 against one another, starting in 2015.

There are many great cities to chose from, but reports claim that Arlington and New Orleans are the two front-runners to host the event (via Edward Aschoff of ESPN).

These two cities are the favorites by such a distance that many other cities likely won't even submit a bid to save themselves the embarrassment.

The question is, f you had a choice, would you pick Arlington or New Orleans? Cowboys Stadium or the Superdome?

Both stadiums have many great things to offer, but there can be only one winner when everything is said and done.

Who will host the Champions Bowl?

Let's take a look.

Cowboys Stadium

1 of 3

Location: Arlington, Texas

Opened: May 27, 2009

Seating capacity: 80,000 (111,000 with standing-room only section)

Cowboys Stadium was only built a couple of years ago, but has already become one of the most popular venues in the nation.

In just over three years, it has held a Super Bowl, the NBA All-Star Game, NCAA basketball championship, numerous big-time college football games and is the new host of the Cotton Bowl.

It holds up to 80,000 people, but has topped over 100,000, which makes it the largest domed stadium in the world.

The stadium is known for the large video displays that hang above the field. These are the largest high-definition displays in the world, and were longer than the basketball court itself when the NBA All-Star Game was hosted at the stadium in 2010.

This is one of the coolest stadiums operating right now and will likely only do bigger and better things with Jerry Jones calling the shots.

Superdome

2 of 3

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

Opened: August 3, 1975

Seating capacity: 76,468

What has the Superdome not done in 30-plus years of existence?

The stadium has held five NCAA basketball championships, six Super Bowls (with a seventh in 2013), baseball games, boxing events, famous concerts and, of course, the BCS Sugar Bowl.

The only thing this stadium has not done is host the Olympics, which I'm sure is not a far-fetched possibility.

The Superdome is one of the most famous stadiums that you could possibly play a football game in, and is known as one of the loudest venues in all of sports (just ask the Minnesota Vikings).

There simply aren't many stadiums that can compete with everything that the Superdome has to offer.

Verdict

3 of 3

You really can't go wrong with either of these stadiums when it comes to hosting such a huge college football event.

However, there is only one stadium that provides the history and the environment, and is simply one of the best that the sport of football has to offer.

That, of course, is the Superdome.

When you think about football stadiums, the Superdome is one of the first that should pop into your head.

It has the history, the reputation and is held in New Orleans—what more could you possibly ask for?

We all know how New Orleans likes to party, and everything else that comes with that wonderful city. There is great food and great music.

This is not to take anything away from Arlington—I hear that brisket is pretty good—but there is just something magical about the city of New Orleans.

Cowboys Stadium is wonderful and is quickly building a reputation, but it still has a ways to go before it reaches Superdome status.

Maybe these two venues can trade off each year to provide us with the best of both worlds?

If not, my vote would be with the stadium that is in New Orleans.
