English Premier League: Power Ranking Every Club by Their Home Kit
Every year, teams get a new kit.
Fans anticipate the launch of their club's new kit and often have mixed feelings when they see the jersey they'll be following for the upcoming year. Sometimes it's delight; other times it's pure amazement at how anybody could think that combination of colors and design would ever look good.
This year in the English Premier League is no different, with all 20 teams unveiling their new strips—some of them are good, whilst others leave a lot to be desired.
So, which team has the best looking strip for next year?
Read on to see the home kit power rankings for the upcoming season—to see how your club fared and what the best looking strip truly is.
20. Southampton
1 of 20Southampton return to the English Premier League with an incredibly bold kit change, and it's not one that I think works for them.
The Saints have ditched the traditional red and white strips for what is essentially a red pinstripe suit up top—a kit that simply doesn't look as good as their former one.
Score: 6/10
19. West Bromwich Albion
2 of 20New sponsor for West Bromwich Albion, but it seems like essentially the same old kit from last season for the Baggies.
The sleeves on the new jersey are blue instead of white—which does help for me—but it just isn't a strip worth mentioning any more than that.
So we'll stop.
Score: 6.5/10
18. Everton
3 of 20Everton might have the Nike tick on their strip now, but for the most part, it's still a relatively boring kit from the Toffees.
I know it's fairly symbolic of the way that Everton play, but I'm just not a fan of this strip. Or white shorts in general, really.
Score: 6.5/10
17. Stoke City
4 of 20Stoke haven't done a Southampton and abandoned the traditional red and white home kit, but their new sponsor Bet 365 is clearly displayed on the front.
Again, it's white shorts—which just isn't practical—but there's just nothing to get excited about with this strip.
Sometimes simple is good, but it just doesn't work for Stoke.
Score: 7/10
16. Wigan Athletic
5 of 20Wigan Athletic gave us a little sneak-peak of their new kit when they wore it against Wolverhampton Wolves at the end of last year, and I really wish they hadn't.
There's no color on this one like they have had before, and whilst there isn't any white shorts to have a go it, there isn't a whole lot else.
Maybe I'll warm to this one throughout the year; I'm just not warming to it much now.
Score: 7/10
15. Manchester United
6 of 20As a self-confessed Manchester United fan, I was looking forward to the release of the new strip—and was thoroughly, thoroughly disappointed.
No, I like the black socks.
We're all aware how I think about white shorts, but the killer was the red-chequered tablecloth that Red Devils fans will have to call their "jersey" for this year.
Score: 7/10
14. Norwich City
7 of 20I get that Norwich are called the Canaries and thus it's kind of important that somewhere on their kit, there's green and yellow, but this year's jersey is maybe a little bit too much.
I like the replacement of the v-neck from last season with a collar, and whilst the bright yellow might be a little bit too much, at least they stuck with their traditional strip.
Score: 7.5/10
13. Sunderland
8 of 20This is Sunderland's new home kit for the upcoming English Premier League season.
If it looks familiar, that's because it's just last year's strip with a single black band around the neck changed to a red band. Other than a new sponsor, that's the only change from the Black Cats.
If it wasn't a nice looking jersey to begin with, it might have fallen further down the power rankings.
Score: 7.5/10
12. Aston Villa
9 of 20Aston Villa's strip for the upcoming season is, for me, the start of the kits that have something going for them in these power rankings.
The Villians have kept their smart-looking home strip—though they have changed sponsors—and given the history that they are starting to have with this jersey, I'm happy to give it a definite pass mark.
Solid kit.
Score: 8/10
11. Liverpool
10 of 20I'm not sure about the lighter shade of red, but this is an otherwise solid kit from Liverpool and one that surely gets the nod of approval from fans.
The club have stripped back the Liver bird—a nostalgic touch perhaps—courtesy of a new kit deal with Warrior Sports, a Boston-based company.
Solid.
Score: 8/10
10. Manchester City
11 of 20Another solid-looking kit from Manchester City, though it does remind me of Uruguay's soccer shirt at the recent 2012 London Olympics.
That and it kind of also looks like a tea towel—an otherwise nothing jersey from the reigning Premier League champions.
Putting Noel Gallagher in your kit launch doesn't make the actual jersey look any better, also. Just for future reference.
Score: 8/10
9. Queens Park Rangers
12 of 20Queens Park Rangers' new jersey—I just don't know what to make of it, which is why it gets a ranking right in the middle of the field this year.
The blue and white works to an extent, but it is a fairly normal, stock-standard jersey.
Oh, and there's a new sponsor. AirAsia instead of Malaysian Airlines in the middle of the strip, but I'm not sure if anyone actually noticed.
Score: 8/10
8. Reading
13 of 20Reading have moved the club's crest into the middle of the shirt—a fantastic move for mine as they return to the top flight in the English Premier League.
PUMA have done a good job with the jersey with the large hoops and they make their mark in the top ten of the rankings with a really nice jersey.
Score: 8/10
7. Newcastle
14 of 20This is Newcastle's home jersey for the upcoming season.
Yes, Newcastle—not Juventus.
The Magpies' new strip does make them look ridiculously like the Italian champions but having said that, it's a nice jersey and they are back in the European competitions this season.
Maybe they can have an Italian feel to their strip after all.
Score: 8/10
6. Tottenham Hotspur
15 of 20Under Armour make their Premier League debut as Spurs new sponsor—and what a striking job they have done with their first Tottenham home kit.
Normally, I'm not a fan of the white, but the all-white strip here with some grey trimming is an excellent move—one that is reminiscent of the strips Spurs used in the 1980's.
And I like the v-neck.
Score: 8.5/10
5. West Ham
16 of 20West Ham are back in the top class, boasting the same strip that the club has become iconic for throughout the years.
The claret body with blue sleeves has become a staple design for the Hammers and it continues to look excellent.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it—and it seems to be working for West Ham.
Score: 8.5/10
4. Fulham
17 of 20Not much change from Fulham from last year, but that's quite fine because the mostly-white strip does the job for the Cottagers once again.
The black pinstripes look good on the white background, with the sponsor and emblem in the same position on the strip.
Another 1980's-esque design gets the job done and takes Fulham into the top four on these EPL power rankings.
Score: 8.5/10
3. Swansea City
18 of 20Gone is the black trimming that usually features on the Swans home kit—replaced with some classy gold trimming on their otherwise all-white kit.
Swansea are celebrating their centenary year this season, and have put out a very stylish home kit for the big year.
They look nearly identical to Real Madrid, so now all that they need to do is play like them and they'll be fine.
No pressure then!
Score: 8.5/10
2. Arsenal
19 of 20Arsenal's new jersey is one that I really, really like.
They've kept the red shirt and white shorts, but have added some stylish red and blue strips on the sleeves—continuing the French flavor at the club.
Maybe Arsene Wenger had a little bit to do with the new kit.
Who knows. It's classy but simple, so he may well have.
Score: 9/10
1. Chelsea
20 of 20But the top spot in the home kit power rankings must go to Chelsea, whose blue strip is clearly the best home kit out of all EPL teams this year.
They've kept the blue, but have notably added some gold trimming down the sleeves—something that I guess you can do and pull off when you're the Champions of Europe.
Will their stylish new strip bring in the results at Stamford Bridge this year? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Score: 9.5/10
