Tottenham Checklist: What Spurs Should Still Be Looking for
With two signings already in the bag, Tottenham continues to feed the back pages of newspapers and tabloids everywhere with transfer fodder.
Whether it's movement in or out of the club, the Spurs are never out of the news.
The biggest bit, of course, is Luka Modric's impending move away and who might fill the hole the Croatian leaves behind.
Speculations also seems to be running high on goalkeepers of late, with Brad Friedel's playing career reaching its twilight stages.
And with forwards needed, there's still plenty of things still to do this summer in the white half of North London.
Here's a layer-by-layer breakdown of what Tottenham are still looking to add this summer.
Goalkeepers
1 of 4Looking For: Everyone out of the pool, apparently.
Tottenham have been shopping around for a replacement for the soon to be over-the-hill Friedel, but haven't come through with anything yet.
A bid for France captain Hugo Lloris went nowhere, and interest has been widespread thereafter, with Julio Cesar possibly in the reckoning.
Iain Strachan of FourFourTwo Australia says that the Spurs have agreed to bring Central Coast Mariners backstop Matt Ryan in August, while Metro, through quotes from Sky, have suggested that Villas-Boas is eyeing up Jaime Jimenez Merlo from Real Valladolid as a backup.
This much back and forth about goalkeepers means that the three currently on the roster could all be here or all be gone by the time the Premier League campaign kicks off in August. Definitely a space to watch for the next month or so.
Defense
2 of 4Looking For: Nothing but deals.
After the Spurs signed Jan Vertonghen, there's probably not much else that needs to be done with the defense that isn't a cut price deal for a high quality defender.
With most of the defense at least two (and three) deep at each position, Tottenham are pretty safe in that regard.
Midfield
3 of 4Looking For: Luka Modric's replacement.
With it just about 99 percent certain that Modric is on his way out the door, the question becomes who will replace the Croatian's passing game.
Villas-Boas seems to have an eye for Porto's Joao Moutinho according to everyone (including the Evening Standard), but his price tag raises serious red flags.
While the right flank still seems short of power should Aaron Lennon fall injured, Villas-Boas' formation might negate the need for a reinforcement there as Gylfi Sigurdsson could possibly be slotted out there as need be.
Forwards
4 of 4Looking For: Warm bodies.
This is the most interesting aspect of the Tottenham squad, mainly due to the fact that it's easily the most undermanned portion of the club.
Jermaine Defoe is the only recognized striker, with Harry Kane more than likely to see more cup and European appearances.
Emmanuel Adebayor's transfer still isn't complete, so there is certainly a dearth of bodies up front.
Leave it to the Daily Mail, then, to pull out a wild rumor of Villas-Boas lining up Hulk.
Yeah, I also don't have much faith in that one.
The Mail also link Tottenham with Malaga's Jose Saloman Rondon, among others, as well as M'Baye Niang.
London24 also shoots down a meek rumor about Lyon heavy hitter Bafetimbi Gomis moving away from France.
With a lack of bodies, Tottenham will need to address this part of the field if Adebayor's deal falls through. The Telegraph thinks Lokomotiv Moscow might try to derail the deal.
Several French players would make a good value play, but this will be the most important space to watch for the next few weeks.
