Why Trent Green Won't Help the Miami Dolphins

Rip SummersbyJun 6, 2007
IconThe Miami Dolphins finally pulled the trigger on Trent Green on Tuesday, trading a fifth-round draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for the veteran QB.
Too bad a marginally competent veteran signal caller is the last thing the Dolphins need.
Listen: Green's a solid player. A good player, maybe. But he's not a star. You can't build a franchise around him. The idea in Miami, one would suppose, is that Green will help tutor rookie QB John Beck, to whom the Dolphins have pegged their future.

The only problem: Beck isn't a franchise quarterback either.
From where I sit, the Dolphins would have done better to nab Brady Quinn on draft day. The old folks say you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket, but you can't build a winner without taking some risks, and Quinn has more upside than Green and Beck combined.
As is stands, the Dolphins have two quarterbacks whose abilities scream "good but not great." Maybe Quinn will be a bust in the NFL or maybe he'll be the next Joe Montana.
Not that Dolphins fans will ever get to find out. Welcome to mediocrity, Miami. Somewhere, Dan Marino is wiping away a tear with an Isotoner glove...
