Luis Felipe Scolari and Chelsea: Lessons Learned from the Marketplace

Roberto Alvarez-GallosoFeb 10, 2009

The news about Chelsea's owner sacking Luis Felipe Scolari after seven months was a surprise for some, and also revealed the fact how far business has driven the sport.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson has bemoaned the sacking of Scolari according to an article by The Telegraph.

I personally think that it was unfair, even by contemporary business standards, to have sacked Scolari.

In a results-driven world, the person is forced to perform under pressure or is sacked. The people who have written the rules in this results-driven world have either forgotten that they are human and can make mistakes, or they are robots and want the same.

I personally compare Roman Abramovich, the Glasers, and the Thaksin Shinawatras who treat their football [soccer] clubs as if they were toys to the Robber Barons of the 19th century. I have another comparison, which is the people who provoked the more-recent loss of jobs and failures, but we are concentrating on sports.

Abramovich, Glaser, and Thaksin Shinawatra only know one thing and they sleep with it—which is money. While money makes the world go around, there are people who are obsessed with money and accuse the coaches of "not giving the person their moneys worth".

In life, there will be victories and defeats. Mr. Abramovich has NO right to blame Scolari for what has happened within the last seven months. He cannot find a Mr. Perfect in Football [Coaching].

It is hoped that this article serves as a warning for those who love football [soccer] with a passion. The potential coaches should think about what they want to do before signing any deals with Abramovich and similar owners. The players and those who love the sport should group together and raise money to buy back their clubs.

The idea of buying back clubs is NOT new and has been used by Manchester United Shareholders Trust in an attempt to buy back Manchester United. For those who complain and say that "nothing can be done", they are either part of the solution or part of the problem.
