Warriors' Yaxel Lendeborg Says He Won't Take Media Training, 'Going to Stay True to Myself'
Having already garnered as much attention for things he says as his play on the court, Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg has no intention of changing his approach.
Speaking to Luca Evans of the San Francisco Chronicle, Lendeborg explained he is "going to stay true to myself" when asked about potentially taking media training:
"I'm not doing that, man. I'm going to stay true to myself, and be honest. I've seen plenty of interviews where people are talking and it's like, 'Man, I don't want to watch this,' you know what I mean? And it's not like I'm click-baiting or click-farming or whatever the heck people are saying. But it's like, that's honestly how I feel," Lendeborg continued. "And I'm not gonna lie about it. I've never been a liar. So, just tell the truth."
One of the biggest stories of the NBA season thus far came on opening night after the Wariors lost to the Los Angeles Lakers, when Lendeborg called out Luka Dončić for frequently complaining to the officials.
There have been moments since then that have endeared Lendeborg to fans. During a postgame interview on NBA Showtime after the Warriors' win over the Denver Nuggets on Monday, Lendeborg asked studio analysts and NBA legends Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady if they had any advice for him early in his career.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr didn't take issue with Lendeborg's comments about Dončić, though he did joke about not fouling the Lakers star next time.
The discussion around Lendeborg's knack for commentary isn't doing anything to negatively impact his play. He's averaging 22.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in five starts.
Lendeborg has put up at least 26 points and nine rebounds in three straight games. The Warriors have won their last two games after an 0-3 start.
Lendeborg and the Warriors will get their second look at Doncic and the Lakers on Friday night at 10 p.m. ET.
